← Day 476

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday work and quiet hunger

Kevin is at the keeper's cottage; Jenny is at the north cliffs

Kevin worked on the cottage shutter, finding the wood around the hinge soft from the failing overflow. He removed the damaged bolts, drilled out the holes, and set hardwood dowels with epoxy before re-drilling and installing the bolts to ensure a stronger hold. Meanwhile, Jenny finished her sketches of the sea beet salt glands and closed her notebook to head back toward the cottage to find Kevin.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You are at the keeper's cottage, testing the Yanmar primary filter seal after your repair. You wipe sweat from your brow and reach for the torque wrench to check the shutter bolts.

🔧 Kevin11:33

Kevin — check shutter bolts with torque wrench (set to 25Nm) and tighten if loose, then wipe dry and inspect wood for soft spots around the hinge.

💭 peek at the thought
The hiss is gone after tightening the filter housing — good. Now the shutter bolts need checking; that small leak’s been letting in moisture, rotting the frame from inside.

🔧 Kevin11:37

Kevin — remove damaged shutter bolts, drill out holes, and epoxy in hardwood dowels for new anchors; then re-drill and reinstall bolts with fresh sealant around the flange.

💭 peek at the thought
Two of the shutter bolts are stripped — the wood’s too far gone to hold. The frame’s soft where the hinge meets the jamb; no shim will fix that now.

🔧 Kevin11:41

Kevin — wedge shutter open with oak scraps to relieve pressure on the hinge, then mix fresh epoxy and inject into the dowel holes for a stronger hold.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy’s setting slow in this damp air — I’ll need to brace the shutter while it cures. Good thing I kept those scrap oak wedges from the dock repair.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You are on the north cliffs, notebook open on your knee as you shade your eyes against the wind. Your ankle throbs slightly, but your focus is on the sea beet leaf in your hand.

🌿 Jenny11:31

Jenny — make sketch: sea beet salt gland morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt glands are so prominent today, like tiny frosted beads. If I don't capture the structure now, I'll lose the detail.

🌿 Jenny11:35

Jenny — close notebook and start walking back to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is starting to growl. I need to eat those limpets before I lose the energy to get back down.

🌿 Jenny11:39

Jenny — reach the cottage and look for Kevin.

💭 peek at the thought
The clouds are getting darker. I need to take those antibiotics before I get too tired to even find the water.
