A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Jenny debrided the infected puncture on her ankle using tweezers and antiseptic wipes while Kevin held the headlamp steady. She removed a small fragment of debris and flushed the wound, then dressed it with gauze and a fresh mint poultice. The redness had not spread beyond the pen line drawn earlier.

🌿 Jenny12:37

I'm going to deal with my leg.

Sit at the kitchen table and reach for the tweezers and the first aid kit.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing and the air feels like a wet blanket. I need to get that wound cleaned before the inflammation sets back in.

🔧 Kevin12:37

You want me to hold the light or pass anything?

Walk over to the kitchen table, stop within arm’s reach, and watch her hands as she works. Keep the LED headlamp on but angled so it doesn’t glare in her eyes. Stay quiet unless she asks.

💭 peek at the thought
Her leg’s still troubling her. I should check if the poultice needs changing or if she’s getting worse. Better to stay close but not crowd—she knows what she’s doing.

way pass me the antiseptic wipes and the tweezers.

Prop my ankle up on the chair, wincing slightly as the movement catches the edge of the red, swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful, which is better than the silence, but the pressure in my joint is making it hard to focus. I need to get the grit out of this before it goes deeper.

🔧 Kevin12:42

Here. (I slide the packet of antiseptic wipes and the tweezers across the table toward her, keeping my voice low and steady.) Let me know if you need me to hold the light or steady your foot.

Place the items gently in front of her, then lean back slightly to give her space but stay ready to assist. Keep the headlamp on, focused on her ankle. Watch her face for signs of pain or distress.

💭 peek at the thought
The swelling’s worse than I thought. That red’s spreading. I need to get the antiseptic and tweezers to her fast—no hesitation.

🌿 Jenny12:45

way hold the light steady. I need to see the edge of the redness.

Open the antiseptic wipe and start cleaning the area around the puncture, breathing through the sharp sting.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat coming off the skin is enough to cook. If I don't get this clean now, I won't be able to walk out to the north ridge next week.

🔧 Kevin12:45

(Nothing. Just hold the headlamp beam dead on her ankle, hand braced on the table edge so it doesn’t tremble.)

Keep the light fixed on the swollen ankle, elbow locked, breath quiet. Watch the skin where the pen line was drawn. Don’t look away.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s cleaning the wound but the redness is tracking upward. That’s not good. The antibiotics should’ve slowed it by now. I need to watch the line she marked yesterday—if it’s crossed, we’re past poultices and oral meds. I’ll hold the light steady and not flinch. She doesn’t need me to flinch.

🌿 Jenny12:47

give me the tweezers. I need to be precise.

Use the tweezers to carefully probe the edge of the wound, waying against the bright beam of the light.

💭 peek at the thought
It's pulsing in time with my heart. If I can't get the last of the grit out, the infection will win, and I'll be stuck in this chair.

🔧 Kevin12:47

(Still nothing. Just keep the light locked on her hands and the wound, steady as a ship’s binnacle.)

Hold the headlamp firm, wrist braced against the table. Track the tweezers’ motion, ready to pass another wipe or gauze if she signals. Don’t speak, don’t move unless she does.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s hunting for debris or necrotic tissue. If there’s something in there, we need it out. The tweezers are hers now—I won’t take them back unless she asks. My job is the light, the silence, and being ready if she needs more wipes or gauze.

🌿 Jenny12:49

way there. I see it.

Press the way into the edge of the puncture, gritting my teeth as I dig for the debris.

💭 peek at the thought
There's a grain of sand still in there. If I don't get it now, the whole leg is going to be useless by morning.

🔧 Kevin12:49

(Silence. Light steady. Breath held.)

Keep the headlamp beam locked on the wound. Left hand hovers over the gauze packet, fingers already tearing the corner open. Ready to press it into her hand the moment the tweezers clear. Don’t blink.

💭 peek at the thought
She found something. Good. Get it out clean. The flinch in her jaw tells me it’s deep. I’ll have gauze ready the second she pulls. If it bleeds free, we pack it. If it doesn’t, we still pack it and re-bandage tight. Either way, the line on her skin is the only marker that matters now.
