Morning Rain and Rising Tide

Steady rain drums against the roof as the water tank reaches its four hundred litre limit. Jenny sits on the bench wrapping her ankle brace while Kevin checks the falling barometer needle near the radio.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the roof of the keeper's cottage. Inside, the air is humid and smells of damp wood and drying herbs. The water tank has finally reached its 400-litre limit, overflowing slightly as the tide rises steadily against the rocks of the south shore.

🌿 Jenny14:09

The tank is full. Don't worry about the water.

Wince slightly as she adjusts the tension on the ankle brace and reaches for her notebook to check the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is moving up my leg; if it hits the joint tomorrow, I won't even be able to walk to the spring.

🔧 Kevin14:09

Barometer's holding at 976. Rain's steady, not building. Front's stalled.

Pour coffee into two tin mugs, set one beside her notebook, then pull the injector nozzle and impact driver from the tool roll.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring it worse than yesterday. The heat I felt through the bandage last night hasn't broken. She's writing like nothing's wrong — that's the lie we both live.

🌿 Jenny14:11

It's too damp for the engine anyway.

Take a slow sip of the hot coffee and trace the line of the leaf venation on the sea beet sketch in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the pressure is the only thing dropping, but the humidity is what's killing me.

Impact driver doesn't care about damp. Penetrating oil's had twelve hours. Either it breaks free or it snaps.

Crack the nozzle loose with the impact driver, steady pressure, feel for the first give.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Humidity this high, the Yanmar'll suck wet air no matter what I do. But my hands need the work.

🌿 Jenny14:13

way be careful. The threads are thin from salt.

Watch his hand move, feeling the throb in her ankle sync with the vibration of the tool.

💭 peek at the thought
If it snaps, we're stuck without the boat for the next cycle.

🔧 Kevin14:13

Slow back-off after each quarter-turn. Let the oil work.

Keep turning the impact driver in short bursts, easing off at resistance, listening for the thread's cry.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's eaten the brass where the nozzle seats. One wrong turn and I strip the head — then we're dead in the water till the boat comes, if it comes.

🌿 Jenny14:15

It's moving.

Lean back against the cold stone wall, watching the rain bead on the glass of the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bolt shears, I'm not the one digging it out with a swollen hand.

🔧 Kevin14:15

Aye. Coming free clean.

Back the nozzle all the way out, blow the seat clear with compressed air, then lap the replacement nozzle with fine valve grinding compound.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The brass is yielding. Now don't get greedy — clean the seat, lap the new one in proper. No shortcuts.
