The Visitor's Toll

Kevin and Jenny stand over the tomato rows to find the shade cloth shredded and several seedlings uptprooted. A large coconut crab scuttles toward the garden wall, leaving deep gouges in the soft damp soil.

A coconut crab destroyed a row of tomato seedlings near the garden edge overnight. Kevin and Jenny worked to replant the uprooted seedlings, but both struggled with the task — Kevin's holes were uneven and Jenny's damaged ankle slowed her handling of the fragile root balls. Several seedlings lost too much root mass and soil contact to survive replanting.

Look at that! He's practically laughing at us.

Step carefully toward the upturned seedlings and crouch down to inspect the root damage.

💭 peek at the thought
Not again. Those damn things have no respect for a botanical survey.

🔧 Kevin16:23

Big bastard. Tracks this morning were him.

walk over to the shredded shade cloth and crouch to examine the anchor points and tie-downs

💭 peek at the thought
That crab's been busy. Deep gouges mean it's big — probably the same one from the tracks this morning. Tomato seedlings are toast, but peppers might recover if the roots aren't sheared. Need to check the shade cloth anchors; if it shredded, the tie-downs failed or the crab went through them.

🌿 Jenny16:25

It's not just the cloth, Kevin. He tore the whole row.

Reach out to gently touch the soil of a uprooted plant, checking if the root ball is still viable.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the hardware, but I'm looking at the loss.

🔧 Kevin16:25

Which ones?

move down the row to inspect each uprooted seedling's root ball, checking for intact taproots and soil contact

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — he didn't just shred cloth, he went down the row. Roots exposed this long in salt wind won't last. Need to get them back in soil fast, water them in. The cloth's secondary.

🌿 Jenny16:27

way of these near the edge. The salt air is already hitting the roots.

Lift an uprooted seedling carefully to see how much soil is still clinging to the roots.

💭 peek at the thought
The Roma tomatoes are the worst—the roots aremaxed out.

🔧 Kevin16:27

Got soil on the roots?

grab the spade from against the garden wall and start re-digging planting holes for the uprooted seedlings, working fast

💭 peek at the thought
Edge row takes the brunt. Salt wind dries roots in minutes. If there's soil clinging, they've got a chance. Need the spade and water — replant deep, firm in, soak immediately. The crab's gone but he'll be back. Wall's not high enough.

🌿 Jenny16:29

I'm trying. We need to get them back in before they dry out completely.

Brush loose dirt away from a tomato root with my fingers, ignoring the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Most of it is still there, but the wind is too dry today.

🔧 Kevin16:29

Hand me the seedlings. I'll get the holes ready.

continue digging holes, making them wider and deeper than the root balls, then tamp the base firm with the spade blade before Jenny replants each one

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through the pain. Roots need to go deep — at least to first true leaf node — and be firmed hard. Salt wind's the real killer now. Water's in the tank, but we should use the limpet broth; it's got salts that might help counter the burn. Crab'll be back at high tide if we don't reinforce.
