Morning Salt and Seed Prep

Jenny sits on the steps sorting the dried sea beet leaves while the morning heat rises. Kevin checks the tension on the dinghy's mooring line, avoiding the damp pages of the notebook.

The sun rises over a flat, heavy sky as the cloud cover begins to thicken over the island. The tide is high, lapping steadily against the reinforced pilings of the dock. Inside the cottage, the air smells of salt, seared sea beets, and the earthy scent of drying mint herbs on the windowsill.

🌿 Jenny00:38

The line is too tight, Kevin. Give it a little slack.

rubs a handful of dried sea beet between fingers, checking for the salt crystals.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing again, but the poultice is holding the heat at bay for now.

Fair point.

walk to the dinghy and ease the mooring line off the cleat, feeding two feet of slack before making it fast again

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the line's singing in the swell. Too much tension and it'll chafe through before the supply boat gets here. I've been fighting the dock ring's wobble so long I'm overcompensating.

🌿 Jenny00:39

Thanks.

picks up the pencil and begins sketching the cross-section of a salt-bladder in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening to something, even if it's just the tension of rope.

🔧 Kevin00:41

None.

walk to the rain tank and check the float valve, then tap the side to hear how full it sounds — about three-nine-oh litres by the weight of it

💭 peek at the thought
She's back in it — focused, quiet. The salt glands are a world onto themselves. I used to think engineering was exact until I saw how much life tweaks itself to survive here.

🌿 Jenny00:41

Right.

shifts her weight to her good leg, wincing as the infection heat flares.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. I can't afford to run dry with the boat still four days out.

🔧 Kevin00:42

Sit down. Now.

take the notebook from her lap and set it on the step beside her, then pull the folding stool out from under the porch and guide her onto it

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through it again. The mint poultice held the swelling down, but the heat's creeping back. I should have made her rest this morning instead of letting her bend over the leaves.

🌿 Jenny00:43

I'm sitting.

leans back against the whitewashed stone, watching the clouds thicken over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful, but he's just making me small.

🔧 Kevin00:45

Let me redo the poultice. Fresh mint, crushed leaf, a splash of vinegar to draw it out.

walk to the herb tray by the kitchen door, snip a sprig of mint, and crush it between my palms before mixing it with a spoonful of vinegar in a clean shell

💭 peek at the thought
The infection's winning the quiet war. If it spikes again we're down to the last blister pack — and no way to get more until the boat.
