Evening meal and storm watch

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun dips and the wind picks up from the northwest.

Kevin heated water at the stove for Jenny's soak while the heat remained heavy over the shrine. He prepared the basin and helped Jenny take her dose of medication to manage the swelling in her ankle. The barometric pressure remains steady, suggesting the storm is still at least twenty-four hours away.

🌿 Jenny02:20

The wind is shifting. We need to secure the garden tarp before the dark.

wipe the grit from my hands and wince as I shift my weight.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; that calm was lying to us and the storm is coming.

🔧 Kevin02:21

Tarp's loose on the southwest corner. Saw it flap earlier. You take that side, I'll batten the north edge.

walk toward the garden with Jenny, uncoiling the heavy-duty twine from my belt as I go

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's turning northwest — that'll push swell into the cove and test the dock lines. Garden tarp first, then check the dinghy's storm anchor warp.

🌿 Jenny02:21

Watch your step, the path is slick with loose shale.

walk slowly toward the garden, clutching my own to steady the throb.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get those stakes in, the wind will rip the plastic into the sea.

🔧 Kevin02:23

I'll scuff my boots loose first, give you a clear tread. Hand me that loose slate — I'll wedge it under the tarp grommet.

kick loose shale aside with my boot heel, then snatch the flat stone Jenny indicated and slip it under the tarp's corner grommet to take the wind load

💭 peek at the thought
That shale came from the north cliff fall last week — still unstable. Jenny's favoring her left ankle again; the poultice held but the metronidazole course is nearly done.

🌿 Jenny02:23

Hold the edge down while I loop the twine. It's getting hard.

lean my weight against the vibrating plastic to keep it from ripping.

💭 peek at the thought
That stone won't hold if the gusts really hit; we need the stakes.

🔧 Kevin02:25

Got it. Pull tight — I'll take the strain on my knee so you can get the knot.

brace my left knee against the tarp's lower edge, pressing my full weight into the plastic to stop the flutter while Jenny loops the twine around the oak stake

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp's vibrating at about 12 Hz — wind hitting the gap between the stake and the plastic. If it tears now we lose the heirloom seedlings to salt burn before dawn.

🌿 Jenny02:25

Quick, before the salt starts catching under the ridge.

knot the twine tight, my fingers slick with the heat and the grit.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to snap that twine if the knot isn't perfect.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:27

Done. Run the last strip under the ridge batten — I'll hammer the batten nails home while you feed it.

snatch the claw hammer from my belt loop and drive two galvanized nails through the batten into the ridge beam, sandwiching the tarp's leading edge tight against the timber

💭 peek at the thought
Salt crust on the ridge beam means the wind's carrying spray over the cottage roof already. That'll eat the tarp stitching by morning if we don't seal the leading edge.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:27

It's tight. Check the ankle before we go back.

wipe the sweat from my brow, wincing as the heat in my leg spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
The batten is holding for now, but the wind is screaming through the ridge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:29

Let's sit on the step. I'll take the boot off and check the poultice — if it's soaked we'll redress it fresh before dark.

lower myself onto the cottage's wooden step, unlacing Jenny's left boot slowly so I don't jar her ankle while she leans on my shoulder for balance

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's swelling again — heat and throb mean the infection's flaring despite the antibiotics. We're down to three metronidazole tablets; if it worsens tonight we may need to consider the evacuation offer.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny02:29

Okay. It's more swollen than morning.

peel the sock away carefully, holding my breath to see the red, angry skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is throbbing in time; I can feel the heat through the wool.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:31

Looks like it's tracking. I'll heat water for a soak, then we'll re-wrap it clean and keep the leg up on the bunk. You take the first dose now — we'll space the next eight hours out.

rise and stride to the kettle on the stove, filling it with fresh spring water and setting it to boil while I speak to Jenny over my shoulder

💭 peek at the thought
The red's spread past the malleolus now — cellulitis tracking up the tendon sheath. We need stronger drainage and a fresh antibiotic shot if we had it, but we don't. Best we can do is hot soak, elevate, and keep the metronidazole going.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny02:31

I'll take them. Just make sure the water is warm.

reach for the blister pack on the table, popping one pill out with shaking fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever spikes, I won't be able to walk to the cliffs tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:32

Water's coming. Lean back on the pillows — I'll test it on my wrist first so we know it's safe.

lift the kettle from the stove once it stops bubbling, pour half into the enamel basin, then dip my wrist in to gauge the temperature before handing it to Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers are trembling — not just from pain, likely the metronidazole starting to kick in. Water needs to be just shy of scalding; too hot and we'll burn the compromised skin.
