The Morning Slack

Kevin crouches by the dinghy, checking the tension on the new bolts as the tide rises. Jenny sits on a nearby crate, wrapping fresh gauze around her ankle while watching the water lap against the pilings.

The tide rises steadily, lifting the dinghy and putting tension on the cedar shims wedged into the north piling. Jenny strains her weight against the way line to keep the boat steady, the movement making her swollen ankle throb as it pulses against the bandage.

🌿 Jenny02:48

The tide is coming in high on the north piling. Watch out for the wood.

Tighten the bandage on my ankle and wince as the fabric brushes the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot is moving faster than he can bolt, and the infection is moving faster than the antibiotics.

🔧 Kevin02:48

I’ll get the shims in before it lifts. Hold the line steady.

wedge cedar shims into the north piling mortise while the ring's unloaded, then drive them home with the rising water seating the ring.

💭 peek at the thought
The north piling’s taking more strain than I expected—those cedar shims won’t hold much longer if the tide keeps rising. I should’ve sistered it yesterday when I had the greenheart offcuts ready. Jenny’s ankle’s still tender; she’s pushing through it again, same as she did with the mooring ring. I don’t say it, but I see her.

🌿 Jenny02:49

It's seating. Don't let it slip.

Pull the way line taut with my weight to stabilize the dinghy against the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
If those shims hold, the dock might actually last until the boat.

🔧 Kevin02:50

Got it. I’ve got the shims seated. Keep pulling—I’ll watch the pile.

watch the north piling for any shift or groaning while Jenny stabilizes the dinghy with the way line.

💭 peek at the thought
The weight’s on the line now—good. If the piling holds, we buy ourselves another tide. Jenny’s using her body like a brace; I can feel the strain in her shoulder even from here. She won’t ask for help, but I’ll watch her knuckles. If they go white, I step in.

🌿 Jenny02:51

It's holding, for now. Watch the gap.

Lean my weight into the line, feeling the pulse in my ankle spike as I strain.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is soft as sponge, but the cedar is deep in there.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:52

Gap’s closed for now. But we need a sister on that piling—greenheart, through-bolts, before the next tide. I’ll get it ready after slack.

scan the gap between the north piling and the mooring ring for movement or water seepage while Jenny maintains tension on the way line.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s feeling it now—sharp pulse in the ankle, strain threading up her leg. The gap’s still there between the piling and the ring, but the shims are biting. If we don’t get a sister on that piling before the next high tide, we’ll be chasing it every time. I should’ve done it when the wood was dry. Now it’s salt-swollen and harder to work.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny02:53

We'll need the greenheart. Just don't let it shift.

Shift my weight to keep the tension, wincing as the movement pulls against the bandage on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot is eating the wood just like the infection is eating my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:55

Slack’s in two hours. I’ll have the sister ready. You get off that line before it takes you down.

check the greenheart offcuts on the dock for straightness and length, then measure the north piling’s circumference for bolt placement.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s holding it together with grit and a bad ankle. The greenheart offcuts are stacked on the dock—two lengths, one already tapered for a shim. I can sister the piling at slack water, but I’ll need the come-along to pull it tight while the bolts go in. She shouldn’t be the one taking the load. Not like this.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:55

I'm holding it. Just need to see the tide turn.

Release the tension just an inch to breathe through the throb in my ankle, heart racing.

💭 peek at the thought
If I let go, the dinghy drifts, and the seeds go with it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:56

I see it. Easy on the line—I’ll take the hold now. Breathe.

take the way line from Jenny, brace my feet against the jetty, and pull steady to stabilize the dinghy while she rests her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s easing off just enough to catch her breath—smart. Heart’s racing, ankle’s on fire, but she’s not letting go completely. The tide’s still flooding; we’ve got maybe forty minutes before it starts to turn. If the piling holds till then, we can work in the slack. I won’t let her carry this alone.
