A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin spent the midday heat reading the letter from Tom on the porch while the tide receded. Jenny stayed in the garden, checking the heirloom seedlings and managing the shade cloth under the dry dry-season sun.

Jenny, I’m going to read Tom’s letter now. If you want to hear it, stay. If not, I’ll keep it to myself.

Pull the oilskin pouch from under the floorboard, unfold Tom’s letter, and begin reading it aloud, voice low but clear.

💭 peek at the thought
The letter’s still under the floorboard. I keep touching the corner like it’ll burn through if I don’t look. Jenny’s inside, quiet. The poultice helped, but the red’s still climbing. I need to read it — not for Tom, not yet. For the part of me that still believes we can say what we mean.

I don't need to hear it, Kevin. Go ahead.

Sit on the edge of the bed, ankle propped up on a stool, watching him unfold the oilskin pouch. The letter has been waiting seven months - let it be read.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to give me space, but I can hear every word he reads. The letter will say what I already know - that they're looking for a medevac option, that the infection is bad, that I should prepare for evacuation. I don't need to hear it.

(reading) "You didn’t have to follow me into the water. You chose to. That’s the difference. Forty minutes in Biscay, and he thinks it was a choice." (pause, voice tight) He still thinks I let go. Like I could’ve held on and didn’t. Like the sea asks permission before it takes you.

Fold the letter carefully, tuck it back into the oilskin pouch, and return it under the floorboard. Sit on the porch step, stare at the tide line, and say nothing.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not pushing me away, but she’s not reaching either. The letter’s thin in my hands — seven months of salt air and silence folded into these creases. I read it slow, like I’m listening for the space between his words.

Jenny — stay on the porch step, watching the water recede from the rocks, the heat in my calf pulsing in time with the fading light.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it was a choice. He doesn't understand the weight of the water, the way it pulls when you're too tired to fight.

You want me to redo the poultice? Mint’s still fresh from this morning.

Stand, walk inside to the kitchen shelf, gather the mint sprigs and a clean cloth, crush the leaves lightly in my palm, then return to the porch and kneel beside her stool to rewrap her ankle with the poultice, securing it with a strip of g

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s going out, slow and sure. Her ankle’s throbbing in rhythm with it — I can see the pulse in the tendon above her heel. She’s not crying. She’s measuring how far the water’s pulled back, like she’s gauging how much of herself is left exposed.
