Midday heat and recovery

The trade wind continues to blow as the tide drops further out, revealing the barnacles on the northern shore.

Kevin spent the peak of the heat at the dock, re-checking the mooring ring and ensuring the cedar wedges were seated tight against the swell. Jenny stayed in the shade of the cottage, managing her ankle's inflammation and sorting through the heirloom seed tin. As the heat began to break, the scent of ripening fruit drifted from the woods calling them together.

Kevin — walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring and wedges, then return to the cottage to check Jenny’s poultice and reapply if needed.

💭 peek at the thought
The trade wind’s steady, tide’s pulling back—barnacles sharp on the rocks. Tank’s at 397, Jenny’s ankle’s quiet now but the red’s still there. I should’ve checked the mooring ring again before the tide dropped—those oak wedges held, but the steel plate’s biting into the timber. If the wind shifts west tonight, we’ll need more than wedges.

🌿 Jenny05:21

The tide is going out fast. Check the ring.

Lean back against the stone wall, wincing as I shift, and sketch the pattern of the exposed area in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The Heat is a physical weight today, and my leg is screaming. If I can't clear this infection, the seeds rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin05:23

I see it. Wedges shifted. I’ll reset them now.

Kneel at the dock, remove the shifted cedar wedges, clear debris from the mortise, then drive in two fresh cedar wedges and two oak wedges alternately, tapping them tight with the mallet until the ring sits firm with no play under hand pres

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching me—sketching the tide’s retreat like it’s data, not just lines. Her ankle’s wrapped tight, but she’s still seeing the pattern, still marking it. I owe her that attention. The ring’s loose again—wedges shifted in the drop. Not much play, but enough. If the wind backs west tonight, this could go fast.

🌿 Jenny05:24

Make sure it's tight. I don't want the boat drifting tonight.

Reach for the heirloom seed tin, tracing the rusted edges with a shaky thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's good with his hands, but he can't fix the rot inside my skin.

🔧 Kevin05:25

It’s tight. Won’t drift. I’ll check it again before dark.

Stand, wipe my hands on my trousers, then walk back to the cottage porch and sit beside Jenny, not speaking, just watching her thumb move over the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tracing the seed tin like it’s a promise—rusted edges, but the seeds inside are still good. She’s thinking ahead, even now. Boat drifting tonight isn’t just about the mooring—it’s about us not getting off this rock when the supply boat comes. I got the ring tight. Now I need to make sure she knows I’m not just fixing wood—I’m holding the line for both of us.

🌿 Jenny05:26

Don't stay out too long.

Open the tin slightly, looking at the dry, dormant potential of grandmother's life.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is making the air move, and my leg is pulsing in time with the waves.

🔧 Kevin05:27

I’m coming in now.

Walk from the dock to the cottage porch, sit down beside Jenny without speaking, and place my hand over hers on the seed tin—just for a moment—then lift it and begin to shell a few limpets for our evening meal.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not just looking at seeds—she’s seeing time. Her grandmother’s hands, the soil they knew, the seasons they counted. And here we are, holding onto something that might grow, even if we don’t. I stayed out long enough. The ring’s set. The tide’s low. The wind’s still from the east—no surge yet. But I won’t risk it. Not when she’s watching me like I’m the only thing keeping the dark from coming in.

🌿 Jenny05:28

The tide is so far out.

Close my eyes for a second, listening to the heat shimmering over the sand.

💭 peek at the thought
His hand is warm, but the infection is a cold fire under my skin.
