The Salt Soak
Jenny begins the process of soaking the ankle in the salt water while Kevin prepares the limpets for a meal. The heat continues to rise.
The heat is a physical weight, pressing down on the cottage as the air ripples over the sand. The tide is high, lapping rhythmically against the dock pilings, while the island falls silent save for the drone of cicadas and the occasional creak of drying wood.
Don't move, the salt will sting deeper. Sit down.
Submerge the ankle in the warm salt water and watch for the redness to react.

Aye. I'll sit. Just tell me when it's had enough.
sit on the stool by the stove, bucket of fresh limpets between my feet, start scrubbing shells with the stiff brush, rinsing each in the seawater bucket before setting aside to steam open.

Focus on the enoughets. I need to see if the skin is softening.
gently probe the edge of the wound with the area to check for way tissue.

I'm focusing. Shells are coming clean. Tell me what you see.
continue scrubbing limpets, set aside a dozen clean ones in the colander, start rinsing the next batch under the tap from the rain tank, keeping my back to Jenny so I don't flinch at what she might see.

It's way more than yesterday. I need to get the debris out before it sets.
use the tweezers to carefully lift the white, dead tissue from the center of the infection.

Take your time. I'll have these ready to steam when you're done.
finish rinsing the limpets, place them in the pot with a splash of seawater and a sprig of mint, set the pot on the stove to simmer, then turn and watch the steam rise, keeping my eyes on the pot, not on Jenny's hands.
