Morning Prep and Low Tide

The heat begins to rise as the sun hits the clouds. The tide is starting to turn back in.

Kevin attempts to backflush the filter and lay a soaker line, but the silt-clogged mesh is stubborn, only yielding a pathetic trickle through. Jenny squats to test the soil depth, finding the earth parched and cracked despite the high humidity, while the tide laps against the dock pilings.

🌿 Jenny07:55

The water's coming back. I need to get the pot inside.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and limp toward the edge of the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises too fast, I won't be able to reach the outer pools. I need those limpets boiled.

I'll take it. You sit—let me.

walk to Jenny, take the pot from her hands, and carry it inland toward the cottage kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's turning and she's moving slow—ankle's worse than she's letting on. I should get that pot off the dock before it gets swamped and give her a hand without making a fuss.

🌿 Jenny07:57

fine. I need to check the garden anyway.

Lean against the rotting way post, watching him go while the tide licks the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful but he's just taking the only thing I could control.

🔧 Kevin07:58

I'll walk with you. Dock's slick—don't want you taking a spill.

set the pot just inside the cottage door, then turn and walk slowly back to Jenny, matching her limp as we head toward the garden path.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through pain again—checking the garden on a bad ankle. I'll set the pot down quick, then go with her. Not to hover, just to be there if she stumbles.

🌿 Jenny07:59

Just watch the step. The soil looks parched.

Limp toward the half-cleared patch behind the cottage, ignoring the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hovering again. I can walk ten feet own a nurse, Kevin.

🔧 Kevin08:00

Soil's cracked. Let me check the tank feed—see if we can get a trickle to the rows.

walk ahead to the cottage side, lift the tarp covering the water outlet, and inspect the hose and drip lines for leaks or blockages.

💭 peek at the thought
She's downplaying it—ankle's swollen, she's favoring it hard. Garden soil's dry as dust after this wind; nothing's taking without water. I'll check the drip line from the tank while she surveys—see if we can get a soak to the roots without wasting what's left.

🌿 Jenny08:01

Check the filter. The silt gets in there every week.

Squat down carefully on my heel, biting through the pain, and press a finger into the dry earth to test the depth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the feed is clogged, the seedlings are dead before they even sprout. I need that moisture right.

🔧 Kevin08:02

On it. I'll backflush the filter and lay a soaker line along the row.

walk to the filter housing beside the tank, unscrew the cap, and pull out the mesh screen to rinse it in the bucket of seawater I brought.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—silt's choked the filter before. She's testing moisture by feel, ankle screaming but she won't stop. I'll clear the filter, then rig a slow soak right at the root zone—give the seedlings a chance without flooding the whole bed.
