Midday Heat and Humidity

The heat intensifies as the tide reaches its peak. You and Jenny meet in the kitchen to discuss the progress before the afternoon chores.

The air is heavy and still in the 26°C heat of the wet season. The tide is high, submerging the lower reef rocks and pressing against the dock. Inside the cottage, the smell of salt and boiling sea beet fills the room as the shutter leak drips steadily into the galvanized bucket.

The barometer is holding steady. Did you check the shutter again?

wipe sweat from forehead with the back of a hand and lean against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the pulse, and this heat is like wet wool.

Yeah. Leak’s still there. Sealant’s not curing — too damp in the air. I’ll try again after tide turns, when it cools a bit. For now, I’ve got the bucket catching most of it.

walk to the rain tank, lift the lid, check water level, then return to the kitchen and pour a glass of water from the tap, hand it to Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat’s pressing in like a wet wool blanket. Shutter’s still weeping at the seam — sealant’s not setting in this humidity. I can feel the tide’s pull in my teeth. Jenny’s ankle’s bothering her again; she’s favoring it but won’t say. I should’ve soaked it in sea beet poultice this morning instead of wrestling the wood.

The humidity is a thief today. We need to move the seeds inside.

take the water, take a long drink, and look at the tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that sealant doesn't set, the rot will get into the floorboards before the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin09:16

Yeah. Let’s get them in the pantry — back corner, off the floor. I’ll shift the tinned beef to make space.

walk to the pantry, move two tins of corned beef to the shelf above, clear a space on the floor, then return to the kitchen, pick up the heirloom seed tin, and carry it to the pantry, placing it flat on the cleared spot.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the heirloom tin’s sweating on the table, and if this damp sticks, the seeds’ll go moldy before we know it. I’ve seen it happen once already. Can’t afford to lose another batch. The inside’s cooler, but it’s tight in there with the radio and the stove. We’ll have to make room.

🌿 Jenny09:17

Good. I'll check the tarp on the garden while you are up there.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are dry for now, even if the air in here is enough to drown.

🔧 Kevin09:18

I’ll be up in a minute. Just securing the shutter bucket first — don’t want it spilling when I’m on the ladder.

walk to the back wall, lift the galvanized bucket under the shutter leak, carry it to the sink, pour the water out, wipe it dry with a cloth, then return it to its place under the leak.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp’s been flapping in the gusts off the water — I saw a corner lift earlier when I was by the dock. If it tears, the seedlings’ll get scorched or drowned, depending on which way the wind’s lying. I’ll need to re-stake it and check the ropes for chafe. Jenny’s heading out to the garden — she’s moving slow on that ankle, but she won’t admit it. I should’ve gone with her.
