Mist and Shutter Inspection

A thick mist clings to the island, muffling the sound of the surf. Jenny sits on the steps checking the damp heirloom seed tin for mold while Kevin examines the shutter frame for the source of the persistent leak.

The thick mist clings to the cottage, muffling the sound of the surf against the shore. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and tide pools near the cove. Inside the cottage, the air is heavy with humidity, smelling of drying sea beet leaves and the metallic tang of the boat engine.

🔧 Kevin09:46

Mind if I take a look at that tin? I’ll hold it steady while you check.

walk over to Jenny on the cottage steps, lower myself to sit beside her, and gently take the heirloom seed tin from her lap to examine it more closely while keeping it level and protected from the damp.

💭 peek at the thought
The mist makes everything feel suspended, like time’s holding its breath. Jenny’s quiet focus on the seed tin tells me she’s still trying to build something lasting here, even if I haven’t kept up my end. The shutter leak’s worse than the cedar wedges could fix — water’s tracking along the grain, not just pooling at the joint. I need to get deeper into the frame before the rot spreads.

🌿 Jenny09:47

Be careful. The moisture is getting under the seal.

pull the tin back slightly toward my chest and inspect the rim for white flecks of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are too heavy. He'll bruise the seed pods if he isn't careful.

🔧 Kevin09:48

Let’s get it out of this mist and into the kitchen where it’s drier. I’ll re-seal the seam with tape while you pull the wedges and check the shutter frame for rot — we’ll need to epoxy it proper this time.

stand, take the seed tin from Jenny, and carry it into the cottage kitchen, placing it on the wooden table away from the damp wall, then retrieve the self-amalgamating tape from the radio shelf and begin wrapping it tightly around the lid s

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the seal’s failing where the tin curves, and any moisture trapped there could ruin the whole batch. If we lose these seeds, we lose next year’s garden, and with it, half the reason we stayed. I can’t fix the shutter and save the seeds at once, but I can try to buy us a little time on both.

🌿 Jenny09:49

Don't pull it so hard. The seeds need to breathe.

walk to the porch and crouch to inspect the wood of the shutter for soft spots.

💭 peek at the thought
If he wraps it too tight, he'll crush the heirloom seeds I've been protecting.

🔧 Kevin09:50

Sorry. I’ll go easy. You keep checking the shutter — I’ll watch the tin for any new spots while I work on the frame.

return to the porch, kneel beside Jenny, and carefully inspect the lower edge of the shutter frame for soft or discolored wood, probing gently with the tip of my pocket knife to test for rot beneath the surface.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s got a point — sealing it too tight could trap moisture and speed up the mold. But if we leave it open, the damp air will get in anyway. There’s a balance, and I’m not sure I know where it lies. Still, the shutter can’t wait — water’s already tracking into the frame, and if we don’t stop it now, we’ll be replacing more than just a wedge.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny09:51

Just focus on the leak. The wood is soft right here near the hinge.

reach for the tin and take it back from his hands to inspect the tape he's applied.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying too hard to be helpful and it's just making me feel crowded.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:52

You’re right — I was pulling too hard. Let the tape breathe. I’ll pull the hinge apart, cut out the soft wood, and let it air before we re-seal it. No shortcuts this time.

remove the self-amalgamating tape from the seed tin lid, hand the tin back to Jenny, then use my pocket knife to carefully remove the shutter hinge pin and begin separating the shutter from the frame to expose the rotted wood behind the hin

💭 peek at the thought
She’s taking back control of the tin — not because she doesn’t trust me, but because she knows this seed stock better than anyone. And she’s right: I was rushing the seal. The hinge is where the leak’s getting in, and the wood’s already spongy. If we don’t cut out the rot and let it dry, any patch we put on will just fail again.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny09:53

Watch the grain. It's more decayed than it looks under the paint.

set the tin on the porch floor and lean in to watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is pulpy. If he pushes too hard the whole frame will give.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:54

I see it. I’ll follow the grain back until the wood’s solid, no matter how much I have to take out.

continue removing the shutter from the frame, then use my chisel to carefully strip away the softened wood along the grain, checking frequently with the blade of my knife to find where the rot ends and sound timber begins.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching close — not just the work, but how I do it. She knows I’m tempted to rush, to slap on epoxy and call it done. But the grain’s telling a different story: the rot’s followed it deep into the stile, and if I don’t get it all, we’ll be back here in a week. This isn’t just about fixing a leak — it’s about doing it right, for once.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny09:55

Slow down. If you go too deep, you'll split the whole board.

reach for my notebook and start a quick sketch of the rot pattern on the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's getting the hang of it, but the wood is still so damp.
