Heavy Air Before the Storm

Kevin stands on the porch with the spruce mast beside him, the sail bag and tool roll at his feet, studying the flat grey sky as the barometer needle drops another notch. Jenny sits at the kitchen table with her ankle propped on a chair, a cloth wrap cooling the swollen joint, the red line tracked faintly up her calf where the light catches it. Between them the generator hums steady, heirloom seed packets spread across its warm housing, while rain threatens in the thickening cloud bank rolling off the water.

The air pressure drops rapidly as the sky thickens over the cottage. Kevin and Jenny quickly move the damp heirloom seeds from the generator housing into the dry kitchen before the rain starts. The tide is far out, exposing the rocks near the shore.

🌿 Jenny22:35

The barometer is falling too fast. We need to move the seeds inside before the rain starts.

Reach out and carefully lift the damp seed packets from the generator to move them into the dry kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity doesn't drop, those seeds will be rot before the boat even arrives. I'm losing them all.

🔧 Kevin22:35

Move them to the top shelf. I'll secure the spar and sail bag first.

lift the spruce spar off the porch deck and lean it against the cottage wall under the eaves, then grab the sail bag and tool roll and carry them through the kitchen door

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure drop. The seeds can't get wet again after three days of drying. Mast can wait ten minutes — if the wind holds.

🌿 Jenny22:36

Keep them away from the wall. The stone is too cold there.

Carefully arrange the heirloom seed packets on the highest shelf, checking each one for white spots of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the gear, he doesn't see the moisture coming off the air.

🔧 Kevin22:37

Top shelf by the flue. Warmest and driest.

walk to the kitchen doorway and scan the sky through the porch opening, watching the cloud bank thicken to the west

💭 peek at the thought
Cold stone draws moisture. She knows that better than I do. The shelf over the stove stays warm from the flue — best spot in the house.

🌿 Jenny22:38

I'll check the tank while you're out. The pressure is dropping.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and walk toward the back of the cottage to the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is like wet wool. If that rain gets through the roof, the seeds are just mush.

🔧 Kevin22:38

Sit back down. I'll check the tank. You stay off it.

step out onto the porch and walk to the 400-litre rain tank against the back wall, tapping the side to gauge the level

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg hard now. The red line's past the knee. She won't say it's worse, but the way she moves tells me everything. Tank check can wait — her leg can't.
