The Approaching Storm

The first heavy drops hit the tin roof as Kevin comes inside with tools.

Kevin secured the stern line at the dock and began stepping the spruce mast despite the rising wind. Jenny assessed her infected ankle, fashioned a makeshift brace, and gathered succulent samples from the north cliffs before the weather closed in.

🌿 Jenny22:50

The water tank is full, but I own check before it really pours.

pull up my way leg to inspect the red swelling on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is going down, and if this ankle gets any worse, I won't make it to the cliffs tomorrow.

Barometer's 978. Wind'll hit 45 before midnight. Mast needs stepping now or we lose the spar to rot. Radio's at the hour — I'll raise the boat, you get the antibiotics list ready.

grab the shortwave handset, tap the cracked insulator bridge with a fingernail, key the mic on 2182 kHz

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. Mast's still on blocks. Her leg's hot to the touch from three feet away — that red line's marching. Radio hour coming up. Supply boat won't cross in this. Need to tell her.

🌿 Jenny22:54

I don't need a list, I need a brace if I want to walk to the cliffs.

sketch the pattern of the swelling in the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already moved on to the radio while I'm sitting here watching my own skin fail.

🔧 Kevin22:55

Brace buys hours. Boat buys days. Talking to them now.

hold the handset away from the cracked insulator, speak into the mic — "Coast Guard, Coast Guard, this is Sorrel Island caretaker station, Sorrel Island, on 2182 kHz, over"

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping it. Tracking the spread like a surveyor. Stubborn as the Yanmar's old injectors. Brace won't stop sepsis. Boat's her only chance. Need the radio to work long enough.

🌿 Jenny22:56

The tide is rising fast, Kevin. Don't forget to secure the gear.

wrap a strip of torn fabric around the ankle to steady the throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
He always retreats into the machinery when the air gets too heavy to look at me properly.

🔧 Kevin22:56

Dock first. Then mast. You stay off it.

set the handset down, grab the crowbar and new rope coil, head out the porch door toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tide's pushing hard. Dock lines need checking. Mast's still on blocks. Radio's dead air so far. Her ankle's swelling past the wrap. Storm's not waiting.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:01

I know how to stay off the dock, Kevin.

make a note: "If the barometer drops below 990, check moorings every 90 minutes — not four hours. The sea doesn't wait for your sleep schedule."

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can run this island like a machine, but even brass gears can't outrun the tide.

🔧 Kevin23:04

Heard a piling snap at 0200. Doubling the stern line now. Back in ten.

walk down the slick path to the dock, coil new half-inch three-strand over shoulder, test the cleat with a boot before leaning over the gunwale

💭 peek at the thought
She's logging lessons now. Good. Means she's planning to be here for the next one. Dock pilings took a hit last night — heard one crack. New rope's dry and sound. Need to double the stern line before the surge picks up.
