Morning work at the dock

The tide is at its lowest point, revealing the tide pools and the extent of the dock damage. Kevin gathers tools while Jenny calls out for more water.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin11:07

I’ll be back in ten. Don’t move that ankle.

Grab crowbar, mallet, oak wedges, and epoxy from the workshop; walk to the dock and start clearing rotten debris from the mooring ring mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s low — good chance to see how bad the dock really is. Jenny’s calling for water; she’s in pain but won’t admit it. I’ll fix the mooring ring first — if that holds, the boat can tie up safe when it comes. Then I’ll get her water and check her ankle again.

🌿 Jenny11:08

I'm not going anywhere. way make sure you check the salt line on the way out.

stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle pulses; walk to the edge of the jetty to inspect the rot patterns on the remaining planks.

💭 peek at the thought
If he thinks I'm just going to sit here while the dock rots away, he hasn't been paying attention.

🔧 Kevin11:09

On it. I’ll mark the salt line while I’m down there.

Kneel at the mooring ring, clear loose debris with the crowbar, then test the timber around the mortise for softness by probing with the bar’s tip.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s up and moving — stubborn as ever. Salt line check means she’s watching for tide creep, worried the dock’ll fail before the boat comes. I’ll work fast but solid; if the ring holds, we buy time.

🌿 Jenny11:10

Be careful with the bar. If you go through, we'll have to sister the whole beam.

lean against the cottage wall to take the weight; pull out the notebook and sketch the way the tide is eroding around the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
That wood sounds like wet cardboard. If that ring goes, the whole way follows it.

🔧 Kevin11:13

Easy. I’m just feeling for the sweet spot.

Use the crowbar tip to gently tap and probe the dock piling adjacent to the mooring ring mortise, listening for hollow sounds and feeling for give, then clear any loose fibers from the mortise edge.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — one slip and we’re looking at a major rebuild. But I know this wood; I’ve felt its give before. I’ll probe slow, listen for the hollow. If it’s punky, I’ll sister it — but not today. Today’s about the ring holding.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny11:14

If it's soft, don't force it. We need to use the way before the boat arrives.

watch the way the bar sinks into the wood; note the depth of the rot in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not a sweet spot, it's structural failure. The salt is eating the heart out.

🔧 Kevin11:15

It’s soft. I’m stopping. Going to wedge and seal it now.

Stop probing, clear the mortise of loose debris with gloved hands, then drive two oak wedges into the mortise using the mallet, seating them flush with the dock surface.

💭 peek at the thought
The bar’s sinking in too easy — this piling’s compromised. Jenny’s watching, noting it down. We can’t risk the ring pulling out under load. I’ll stop probing, clean the mortise, and get the wedges in before the tide turns.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny11:16

Make sure they're tight. I don't want that ring pulling when the swell hits tonight.

watch him work, ankle throbbing in time; walk to the edge of the jetty to inspect the rotten planks.

💭 peek at the thought
wayges won't hold the tide back if the wood is compromised all the way.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:17

They’re in. Gonna seat them now.

Strike the oak wedges firmly with the mallet to drive them deeper into the mortise, then test the mooring ring for lateral movement by trying to wiggle it by hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching every move — knows what’s at stake. The wedges are in, but they need to bite. I’ll torque them down with the mallet, then check for play. If the ring still shifts, we’ll sister the piling tomorrow — but tonight, it has to hold.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny11:18

Give it a good tug. If it shifts, we'll have to sister the whole beam tomorrow.

lean my weight against the timber, watching the way the tide is receding from the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If that moves even a way, the whole jetty is done.
