low tide harvest

You meet at the rocky shelf where the tide reaches its lowest point. The pools are teeming with limpets and small.

Kevin and Jenny are at the tide pools during the low tide. The sky is flat and clouds are thickening, signaling a coming change in the 26°C wet season heat. They have just boiled limpets and sea beet for food, and the supply boat is four days away.

🌿 Jenny11:49

The tide is out too far. We have an hour at most.

Squat on a flat rock, clutching my sketchbook and supporting my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops any further, I won't be able to get back up the slope before the water cuts in.

🔧 Kevin11:50

Aye. Let's get the limpets while we can. I'll take the bucket, you keep watch on the water.

walk to the edge of the tide pool, crouch, and begin scooping limpets into the bucket with my hands, keeping one eye on the incoming swell.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—we don't have much time before the water rushes back. I need to gather what we can and get her off these rocks before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny11:51

Watch your footing, the shelf is like glass today.

Sketch the intricate pattern of the octopus hiding in the crevice next to him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for that heat; he's going to slip on the black rock.

🔧 Kevin11:53

Thanks. I'll take it slow. Hand me that limpets bag when it's full—I'll start heading back.

continue gathering limpets with deliberate, careful movements, testing each foothold before shifting weight, while glancing up at Jenny for any sign of the tide changing.

💭 peek at the thought
The rock is slick with algae and seawater—one slip and we're both in the drink. I need to move slow, keep my weight low, and trust Jenny's eyes on the water.

🌿 Jenny11:54

Hurry up. The swell is already hitting the shelf.

Hand the heavy bag of limpets to him, wincing as I shift my weight off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is already licking the lower rocks. It's coming in faster than he thinks.

🔧 Kevin11:55

Got it. On my back—hold tight. We're moving.

sling the limpets bag over one shoulder, bend low, and let Jenny climb onto my back, arms around my neck, then push off the slick rock and carry her toward the beach as fast as the footing allows.

💭 peek at the thought
She's in pain but won't say it—she's pushing herself to get us both off these rocks. I need to take the weight and move fast now, before the water cuts us off.

🌿 Jenny11:56

Watch the steps, Kevin! Don't slip.

Wrap my arms tightly around his neck, my face pressed against his shoulder as we dodge the rising tide.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to blow his knee if he runs like that, but the water is right there.

🔧 Kevin11:57

I've got you. Just keep your eyes on the path ahead—I'll feel the rocks.

move carefully across the wet, algae-slick stones, testing each step with my toes before committing my weight, keeping Jenny secure on my back as we climb toward the higher beach where the tide won't reach.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step is a gamble—her weight, my grip, the sucking water behind us. I can't afford to lose my footing now, not with her hurt and the tide eating the shelf.
