Morning in the Fog

Thick fog obscures the horizon, leaving the lighthouse invisible from the porch. Jenny sits at the kitchen table checking her ankle while Kevin prepares the morning limpets on the stove.

Kevin prepares a limpet and sea beet broth while the fog presses against the cottage windows. Jenny unwinds the bandage from her swollen ankle, wincing as the damp air hits the raw skin before they eat.

Breakfast’ll be ready in ten. You want the sea beet on the side or mixed in?

Stir the pot of limpets on the stove, adjusting the flame under the kettle to maintain a steady boil.

💭 peek at the thought
The fog’s thick today—no lighthouse beam cutting through. Jenny’s checking her ankle again; the poultice helped the swelling but the heat’s still there. I can’t fix what’s inside her, but I can make sure she eats. Limpets need a good boil—tenderize them before the meat turns to rubber.

🌿 Jenny13:06

Mix it in. I need the salt.

Jenny carefully unwinds the bandage from her swollen ankle, wincing as the cool air hits the way skin, and traces the edge of the redness with a clean finger.

💭 peek at the thought
If this infection moves any further up, I won't even be able to walk to the northern cove today.

Got it. Sea beet going in now. (I slide the limpets to the side of the pot and add the chopped leaves, letting them wilt in the hot water.) How’s it feel when you flex it?

Continue stirring the pot, keeping the limpets and sea beet submerged and moving, watching for the moment the limpet shells begin to open.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tracing the red line—same as yesterday, same as the day before. The infection’s not retreating. Antibiotics are doing their work slow, but the poultice is the only thing giving her relief. I’ll keep the limpets moving; overcook them and they’re useless.

🌿 Jenny13:08

Tight. Like the skin is trying to get away from the bone.

Jenny tries to curl her toes, her face tightening as she battles a sharp wave of nausea from the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
It feels like a hot iron pressed under the skin, pulsing in time with my heart.

🔧 Kevin13:09

Limpets are ready. I’ll drain them and plate up. When you’re set, we’ll look at the ankle together—see if it’s time to open it again.

Lift the pot from the stove, pour off the hot water into the sink, and transfer the limpets and sea beet to two tin mugs. Set them on the table beside Jenny, then reach for the clean gauze and antibiotic ointment from the first aid kit.

💭 peek at the thought
That’s not just infection—it’s pressure building under the skin. The poultice draws, but it can’t cut. If it abscesses again, we’ll have to lance it. I hate putting her through that, but leaving it risks sepsis. The limpets are almost done—shells gaping, meat curled. I’ll take them off before they toughen.

🌿 Jenny13:10

Eat first. I need to.

Jenny picks up the mug, her hands trembling slightly as she takes a cautious sip of the warm broth.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't eat, I won't have the strength to reach the cove.
