The Rising Tide

The air remains heavy as the tide begins to creep back over the salt pools. Kevin returns from the cliffs while Jenny notices the barometer needle continues its slow downward crawl.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny15:11

The pressure is falling, Kevin. Did you see any movement on the horizon?

Jenny pulls the limpets off the heat and winces as her hand brushes the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm going to lose the ability to even walk.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Nothing yet. Just gulls working the tide line. I’ll check the mooring ring now—see if it’s still shifting.

walk to dock, inspect mooring ring for movement under rising tide, tighten if loose with mallet and wedges

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s drop means weather’s turning. I need to check the dock ring again—those oak wedges might not hold if the swell comes up. Jenny’s ankle’s worse; I should’ve stayed closer.

🌿 Jenny15:13

Be careful on the slip, the tide is coming in faster than the charts suggested.

Jenny lifts the boiling limpets into a bowl and reaches for the tweezers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the dock while I'm rotting from the inside out. I need to clean this again.

🔧 Kevin15:14

On it. Won’t be long.

jog to dock, check mooring ring play with hands, drive in additional oak wedges with mallet to take up slack, test for movement under load by pulling on ring with body weight

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s moving quicker than expected—got to work fast before the water cuts off the path. Jenny’s doing what she can with the limpets; I’ll make sure the ring holds so the dinghy stays safe when the supply boat tries to come in.

🌿 Jenny15:15

The barometer is dropping fast. Don't stay too long on the water.

Jenny dips the tweezers into the salt water and prepares to debride the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't show, I'm just fertilizer for this island. My leg is pulsing.

🔧 Kevin15:16

Almost done. Just setting the plate—should hold through the blow.

clean mortise of debris, mix epoxy, position steel doubler plate over ring, drive four 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, torque to 35Nm with wrench, wipe excess epoxy, let set while watching tide edge closer

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure’s falling hard—storm’s coming sooner than thought. I’ve got to seal the mooring ring now, not just wedge it. Jenny’s tending her ankle; I’ll use the epoxy and doubler plate like before, but I need to move fast before the tide makes it impossible.

🌿 Jenny15:17

The pressure is bottoming out. Just get back before the tide turns.

Jenny presses the tweezers to the edge of the red swelling, biting her lip to stifle a sound.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical with the bolts while I'm literally falling apart. The heat in my leg is unbearable.

🔧 Kevin15:18

Plate’s set. Bolts are tight. I’m coming in now.

sprint back along spring path, slip on wet stones near tidepools, regain footing, hurry to cottage porch, shake off rain, enter kitchen, hand Jenny the clean gauze and antibiotic blister pack without a word

💭 peek at the thought
The storm’s hitting now—wind’s picking up, rain’ll follow. I’ve got the plate in, bolts snug. Need to get back before the tide cuts the path and the wind makes the dock unsafe. Jenny’s in pain; I should’ve been there sooner.
