A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air is heavy and humid at 26°C, the overcast sky pressing down as the low tide has fully exposed the tide pools and the sandy flats leading toward the seaward wall. Inside the cottage, the barometer shows a steady drop, signaling an approaching shift in the wet season.

🔧 Kevin16:07

Kevin — walk to the dinghy, open the engine cover, feel the injector housing on cylinder one for play or heat distortion.

💭 peek at the thought
The mooring ring is solid now. No shift under load. I should check the Yanmar injector seat while the engine’s warm from breakfast.

🌿 Jenny16:08

Jenny — sit on the porch steps, rubbing my ankle, and watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a mechanical failure because he can't handle the one between us.

🔧 Kevin16:10

I’ll spin her over slow, listen for any miss.

pull the decompression lever, turn the flywheel by hand two full revolutions, feel for resistance and note any uneven drag.

💭 peek at the thought
The injector seat looks seated true, but I’ll run a compression check to be sure before I put it under load again.

🌿 Jenny16:11

Check the plugs for carbon first.

Lean back against the stone wall and listen for the click of the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can't find a problem, we're just rotting in this silence together.

🔧 Kevin16:12

Plugs first. Give me the wrench.

reach for the socket on the shelf, loosen the plug on cylinder one, lift it out, and hold it to the light to inspect the electrode and insulator.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — carbon buildup could be mimicking a mechanical issue. I’ll pull the plugs and have a look.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:13

Here.

Hand him the ratchet and the socket.

💭 peek at the thought
It's fouled, just like everything else.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:14

This one’s fouled but usable. I’ll reset the gap to 0.75 and check the rest.

take the feeler gauge from the tool roll, bend the side electrode gently to 0.75 mm, then move to cylinder two and repeat the process — remove, inspect, clean, gap.

💭 peek at the thought
The plug’s tip is black with dry soot — normal for light load, but the gap’s worn wide. I’ll clean it, reset the gap, and check the others.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:15

Check for cracks in the porcelain.

Watch his hands work, feeling the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so meticulous with the gap, but doesn't see the swelling in my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:16

Porcelain’s clean. I’m putting them back in now.

thread each plug by hand until seated, then torque to 18Nm with the wrench, working clockwise from cylinder one to four.

💭 peek at the thought
No cracks visible — just carbon and gap wear. All four plugs are serviceable. I’ll reinstall them and torque to spec.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:17

What's next? The fuel?

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the plugs are tight, even if the infection isn't.
