Evening gathering before the rain
The air is heavy and still as the first drops of rain fall. You both gather in the kitchen with the new supplies laid out on the table.
Kevin verified the corned beef tins and coffee jar were intact and edible, then sorted the remaining unmarked tins from the waterlogged crate. Jenny sketched sea beet morphology while applying a hot compress to her ankle, though the heat provided only partial relief.
Check the seals on the tins. We need to know what we actually have left before the boat comes.
Press the hot compress to my ankle and wince as the heat hits the inflamed skin.

On it. Salt water didn't get inside these — seals look intact. Corned beef: five tins. Mackerel's gone. Coffee's sealed. Let me sort them by date — oldest first.
wipe the table dry with a rag, then line up the tins in a row and press each lid to test for bulging or soft spots, calling out the condition as I go.

just check the corned beef first. If those are bad, we're eating salt by tomorrow.
open the notebook and start sketching the salt glands on the sea beet leaves.

Five tins. Dates stamped '28, '29, two '30, one '31. All lids solid — no give, no rust bloom at the seams. Salt-blurred labels but the crimps are clean.
press each corned beef tin hard with both thumbs, checking for any micro-leak or seam separation, then set them in a separate stack from the unknown tins.

good. Now check the coffee.

Glass jar, screw top intact. Seal's unbroken — no salt crust in the threads. Coffee's dry. Smells right when I crack it.
unscrew the lid a fraction, sniff, then reseal it tight and set it beside the corned beef stack.

Check what's left in the crate. The ones we can't read.
apply the hot way to my ankle and wince at the pressure.

Right. Let me pull them.
lift the remaining tins from the crate one by one, wiping salt crust off each lid with a damp rag, squinting at the faint embossed codes stamped into the metal ends, sorting them into piles by whatever markings survive.
