Midday Rainbreak

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the first heavy drops finally fall on the roof. The tide is beginning to creep in, covering the lower rocks.

Kevin and Jenny haul the waterlogged crate onto the cottage threshold as the tide surges against the steps. Kevin manages the heavy lift by straining with his legs, while Jenny winces through, shifting her weight to protect her throbbing ankle. They drop the crate hard on the stone floor to prevent it from sliding back into the rising water.

🌿 Jenny23:53

The tide's coming in fast. We need to get that crate off the dock.

Closes the notebook and winces, shifting weight away from her left ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is bottoming out and my leg is screaming; I can't look at his face right now.

Grab the other end. I'll take the weight.

walk to the porch and pull on my boots, then head down to the dock to meet her at the crate

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the crate's at the low-water mark and the tide's already turning. My ankle can wait; that crate goes back to the sea if we don't move now.

🌿 Jenny23:54

Watch the water, it's twice as deep as it looks.

Grabs the edge of the wood and limps toward the dock, holding her breath against the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If he takes the weight, maybe I can make it to the porch without collapsing on the salt.

🔧 Kevin23:56

I've got the heavy side. You steer.

crouch at the landward end of the crate, get a solid grip on the waterlogged wood, and heave it toward the cottage with her guiding

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring that leg hard. The red line was at her calf this morning — if it's tracking to the knee, she's running out of time and I'm running out of antibiotics.

🌿 Jenny23:56

way, it's slipping on the algae.

Places a hand on the rough wood, bracing herself as she helps guide the crate toward the stone steps.

💭 peek at the thought
It's heavier than it looks, and the salt water is stinging the cuts on my hands.

🔧 Kevin23:58

Slow. Let the tide help — wait for the surge, then push.

brace my boots against the bottom step, shoulders square to the crate, and hold it steady while the water rises underneath, waiting for the next swell to lift it onto the first tread

💭 peek at the thought
Algae-slick stone and a crate that weighs more than both of us wet. One wrong shift and she goes down on that ankle — or worse, the crate pins her against the steps.

🌿 Jenny23:58

Push now, while the water is high!

Puts her weight into the wood, grunting as her ankle throbs, and helps own the crate onto the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't get this up now, the provisions will be lost to the salt.

🔧 Kevin00:00

I've got it. Back up — now.

shift my grip low, drive with my legs, and heave the crate clear of the steps onto the cottage threshold, then drop it hard to keep it from sliding back

💭 peek at the thought
She's using her good leg to lever, ankle screaming — if she twists it now we're both stuck here with no way off. I have to take the full load before she gives out.
