Morning humidity and rising tide

Jenny sits on the porch steps watching the thickening clouds while she massages her swollen ankle. Kevin checks the barometer, noting the steady drop as the pressure falls. The air is heavy and smells of salt and damp earth.

The sky thickens with a heavy, grey weight as the humidity climbs in the wet season. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower stones of the shrine and threatening the dock's edge. While the garden tarp is secured, the wind is shifting, and the bruised purple clouds over the north ridge promise a coming front.

The barometer is dropping too fast. We need to secure the garden tarp before the wind turns.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, then reaches for her own to sketch the specific cloud formations over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If that storm hits before the boat comes, I won't have the strength to fix the roof, let alone the garden.

On it. I’ll start at the south corners and work upwind.

walk to the garden, grab the timber strips and extra rope from the shed, then move to the south corner of the tarp where it’s lifting and begin re-staking it with the oak stakes, pulling the tarp tight and securing it with the strips and ro

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s falling fast—storm’s coming sooner than the barometer let on. Jenny’s ankle’s bad, but she’s still watching the sky. I need to get that tarp down before it tears loose and takes the seedlings with it.

Make sure the stakes are deep; the soil is too saturated to hold them shallow.

Jenny watches him from the porch, her pencil moving across the paper as she captures the heavy, bruised purple of the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fighting the island again, but the tide is coming in regardless of a few stakes.

Going deep this time. Mallet’s in the shed.

return to the shed for the mallet, then drive each oak stake at the south and southeast corners at least 30 centimeters into the soil, angling them slightly away from the tarp to resist uplift, then lash the tarp securely with the timber st

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—shallow stakes will rip out in the first gust. I need to drive them past the soft topsoil into the firmer ground below, even if it means using the mallet and putting my weight into it. Her ankle’s keeping her off the ground, but her eyes are still on the garden—she’s seeing what I might miss.

🌿 Jenny22:01

Check the tension on the north side; the wind is already starting to catch it.

Jenny winces as a sharp spike of pain shoots through her ankle, then leans back against the stone wall to watch him.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind picks up any more, the whole garden will be lost to the mud by morning.

North side’s loose—coming now.

run to the north side of the garden, grab the tarp where it’s lifting, pull it tight toward the ridge beam, and re-stake it with the remaining oak stakes, driving them deep and securing with the timber strips and rope, then double-check all

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s picking up—she’s feeling it in her bones, and the tarp’s already billowing on the north edge. If I don’t get that tension even, it’ll start flapping and tear at the weak points. I’ve got to move fast before it catches fully.
