The pair settles into the cottage as the sun dips below the horizon. The sound of the rat scratching in the pantry grows louder in the quiet, and the barometer continues its slow descent on the floorboards.
Kevin checked the traps around the cottage but found nothing but a dead mouse in one snare. Jenny applied a warm mint poultice to her swelling ankle and watched the clouds thicken over the wet season sky.
