A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air is still and warm as the morning heat begins to rise. The tide is steadily climbing against the dock pilings, water lapping rhythmically against the new wood. Inside the cottage, the scent of drying sea beet and woodsmoke lingers faintly in the 28°C heat.

🔧 Kevin23:44

Kevin — walk into the cottage, pull the Yanmar cylinder head from the table, and begin cleaning the injector seat on cylinder one with a brass brush and penetrating oil.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s high again, and the mooring ring’s holding—bronze sleeve seated deep. Storm’s coming before the boat. I should check the Yanmar injector seat on cylinder one like I planned, then reinforce the garden tarp windward edges. Low on energy, but the work keeps the guilt quiet.

The barometer is dropping too fast.

sit on the kitchen chair, propping my ankle up on a stool, and opens the enough seed tin to check for more mold.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat in my leg is throbbing in time with his brushing; he's focused on the engine while I'm literally rotting.

🔧 Kevin23:46

Aye. Batten down the hatches before dark. I’ll finish the injector check, then secure the tarp and radio mast.

Continue cleaning the injector seat with the brass brush, then wipe it clean with a rag and inspect for pitting or wear.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—the pressure’s falling fast. Storm’s moving in quicker than I thought. She’s checking the seed tin again, ankle propped up, quiet but sharp. I should’ve listened earlier.

🌿 Jenny23:47

Just make sure the radio mast is tight; I can't lose the signal again.

reach for the mint poultice, carefully re-wrap the ankle, and watch the red streaks moving toward my knee.

💭 peek at the thought
If the storm hits before the boat comes, I won't be able to even walk to the shore.

🔧 Kevin23:48

I’ll redo the poultice with fresh sea beet and mint, then check the mast. Hold still.

Remove the old poultice, clean the ankle with boiled water and gauze, then apply a fresh poultice made from crushed sea beet leaves and mint sprigs, re-wrap with clean cloth, and secure it snug but not tight.

💭 peek at the thought
Those red streaks are spreading—need to act fast on the infection, not just wrap it. She’s worried about the radio mast, but her leg’s the real emergency. I’ll fix both, starting with her.
