Morning tide and dock inspection

Kevin sits on the edge of the dock, checking the tension on the new mooring line. Jenny sits on a crate nearby, watching the tide recede from the barnacle pilings. The air is heavy as the clouds thicken overhead.

Kevin cooked limpets for breakfast while Jenny prepared salt water for her ankle soak. After cooking, Kevin removed the limpets from the pot and began drawing hot water for Jenny's ankle treatment. Jenny soaked her ankle in the prepared salt water while Kevin monitored the limpets and readied the stove.

🌿 Jenny05:21

The tide is going out too far today. We need to check the lower planks again.

Jenny reaches for her notebook and begins to sketch the rot patterns on the main dock beam.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way drops further, the boat won't make it in the swell. My leg is throbbing with every pulse.

Aye. I'll take a look after breakfast. First, gut these limpets — they'll spoil if we wait.

gut and cook limpets for breakfast

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the falling tide exposes more rot, and if the lower planks are compromised, the whole beam could give under load. I should check them before the supply boat tries to tie up in six days.

🌿 Jenny05:24

I'll get the salt water ready for the ankle first.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as she shifts her weight, and moves toward the cottage to find the tweezers and salt.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my head hurts, but the smell of boiling salt is making my stomach turn.

🔧 Kevin05:24

I'll have the pot on by the time you're back. Just shout if you need the bellows.

light the stove and set the pot of water to boil for limpets, then add cleaned limpets to cook

💭 peek at the thought
She's tending to her ankle again — the infection's stubborn, but she's not complaining. I'll handle the limpets and keep the fire going so she can have clean water when she comes back.

🌿 Jenny05:25

I'll be a minute.

Jenny enters the cottage, opens the first aid kit, and retrieves the jar of salt and the tweezers.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get this clean now, I won't be able to hold the tweezers for the seeds next month.

🔧 Kevin05:26

(nothing — just nod toward the stove where the pot is simmering)

monitor the limpets as they cook, skimming foam and adjusting heat to keep a gentle boil

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking her time — good. Means she's being careful. I'll keep an eye on the limpets so they don't overcook and get tough. Once they're done, I'll take the plate to the cottage so she doesn't have to move far.

🌿 Jenny05:27

Is the water ready for the soak yet?

Jenny sits on the low stool in the kitchen, rolling up the hem of her trousers to expose the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is starting to dissolve in the water, but the infection is deeper than the surface. I need to be thorough before the tide comes back in.

🔧 Kevin05:28

Nearly. One more minute, then I'll draw the water.

remove limpets from pot, set them on a plate to cool, then pour hot water into a basin and carry it to the kitchen stool for her ankle soak

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are nearly done — just need a minute more. I'll lift them out, set them aside to cool slightly, and then pour the hot water into a basin for her soak. She's waiting — no point making her wait longer.
