Dinner and Assessment

You both meet in the cottage kitchen, ready to share the boiled limpets and mackerel you have prepared. The radio is still silent, but you discuss the partial success of the insulator replacement and plan the next steps for the garden wall and the dock mooring ring.

Kevin started a fire in the stove to combat the humidity while they attempted to patch the water tank leak. Jenny rested her ankle and sketched mold growth patterns, but the epoxy failed to bond properly to the damp surface.

🔧 Kevin07:44

Food’s ready. Limpet broth’s warm, mackerel’s flaky. Eat while it’s hot.

ladle broth into two tin mugs, place one in front of Jenny, sit across from her at the table, begin eating slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets smell good, but I can see Jenny’s ankle is worse today. I fixed the insulator as best I could with the spare porcelain, but the tape isn’t holding the seal like it should. The dock ring still shifts — I know it, even if I didn’t say it. I want to tell her I’ll do better, but words feel useless when my hands are what she trusts.

🌿 Jenny07:45

Thanks. The broth is good. The tank is still leaking through the tape.

Pick up the mug, take a slow sip of the broth, and look at the steam rising in the dim light.

💭 peek at the thought
My leg is throbbing in time with the tide, and I need the salt before I have the strength to finish that wall sketch.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:46

Yeah, I saw it too. The tape’s not sealing where the overflow meets the tank wall. I’ll pull it back, clean the area, and try again with fresh oak shims and more epoxy — let it cure overnight. If that doesn’t work, we’ll have to divert the overflow further out, maybe dig a sump.

set down mug, wipe hands on trousers, stand up, walk to the rain tank at the back of the cottage, crouch to inspect the overflow joint where the tape is peeling and water seeps through.

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed the leak. Of course she did. She sees everything, even when she’s in pain. I told myself the oak shims and epoxy would hold, but the tank’s old, and the pressure’s too much. I should’ve dug a deeper channel, used more epoxy, waited for the tide to drop. I keep trying to fix things with what’s at hand, but some breaks need more than tape and hope.

🌿 Jenny07:47

Make sure the surface is dry first. The salt will make the epoxy slide off.

Lean back in the chair, rubbing my swollen ankle, and watch him work at the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
If that doesn't hold, we'll lose the level before the boat comes, and I'm already low on the water.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:48

You’re right. I’ll wait till the tide drops, dry the area with a cloth, then warm it with the torch before applying new shims and epoxy. It’ll hold better that way.

take a dry cloth from the shelf, begin wiping the overflow joint and surrounding tank wall to remove surface moisture and salt residue, then unscrew the propane torch from the rack, check fuel level, and ignite it to gently warm the area.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — salt and damp ruin adhesion. I rushed it, taped over wet wood, and now it’s failing. I need to wait for low tide, let the area dry, maybe even heat it gently with a torch to drive off moisture. She’s watching me, not with anger, just quiet expectation. I hate that she has to see me struggle with something so basic. I should’ve listened when she said the surface needed to be dry.

🌿 Jenny07:49

Don't overheat the plastic. You'll warp the tank.

Pick up my notebook and pencil, beginning to sketch the mold-growth patterns on the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wood, but I'm focused on the way the water is still weeping through the skin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:51

Got it. Low heat, just to dry — no direct flame on the fittings. I’ll keep it moving.

adjust torch to a low, broad flame, begin warming the tank wall and overflow joint in slow passes, keeping the tip at least ten centimeters away from plastic fittings, continue wiping with cloth as surface dries.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s always thinking ahead — protecting the tank, watching the seeds, even while her ankle throbs. I almost forgot the fittings are plastic; the torch could melt them if I’m not careful. I need to keep the flame low, just enough to drive off damp, not melt anything. She’s sketching the mold now, quiet focus. I wish I could give her that same peace — fixing something and having it stay fixed.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny07:51

It's moving toward the edges. The humidity is too high.

Press the pencil to the paper, detailing the delicate filaments of the mold on the seed tin's surface.

💭 peek at the thought
The mold on this tin looks like a map of the infection—spreading, grey, and relentless.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:52

Yeah, it’s soaked through. I’ll wait till later, when the tide’s out and the wind picks up. In the meantime, I’ll rig a temporary cover — canvas and rope — to keep spray off the joint while we work on it.

lower torch, shut off fuel, coil hose neatly, walk to the porch, grab the heavy-duty tarp and a length of new three-strand rope, begin rigging a lean-to over the overflow joint by securing tarp corners to nearby stakes and the tank’s base,

💭 peek at the thought
The air’s thick with moisture — even the notebook’s curling. No wonder the tape won’t stick. I can dry the surface, but if the humidity’s this high, the epoxy might not cure right. I should wait for a breeze, or do this inside where it’s drier — but the tank’s outside. Maybe I need to seal it from the inside instead. Or build a temporary shelter over the joint to keep the spray off. She’s focused on the mold — tracking its spread like it matters. It does. Everything here matters.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny07:53

The tarp should hold for tonight. But we need that surface dry own.

Close the notebook, set the pencil on the table, and stand up slowly, nursing the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in, and the air is getting heavy. My leg is a warning.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:54

You sit. I’ll finish the tarp and then check on you. No sense in both of us being miserable.

secure the final tarp corner with a timber stake and rope lashing, pull the shelter taut to deflect spray and drizzle, then walk back to the cottage, stop beside Jenny, and gently take her arm to help her lower back into the chair.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s pushing herself up despite the pain. I see how she favours her left foot, how her breath tightens when she puts weight on it. She’s not complaining, but I know — the poultice helped, but it’s not enough. The tank can wait. She can’t. I should’ve made her rest earlier. I keep thinking if I just fix the next thing, the next thing, then we’ll be alright. But she’s not alright. And I’m not fixing what matters most.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny07:55

I'm fine, Kevin. Just tired of the damp.

Lean back against the whitewashed stone, closing my eyes for a second to ignore the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the heat in my leg is making everything pulse.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:56

I know. I’ll get the fire going, dry the air a bit. And tomorrow, first light, I’ll take you to the spring — clean water, sit in the sun. Let that ankle soak. We’ll skip the tank till then.

walk to the wood stove, open the door, lay kindling and split wood, strike a match, begin building a small fire to warm the cottage and reduce humidity, then return to Jenny, kneel beside her chair, and place a cool, damp cloth from the wat

💭 peek at the thought
She says she’s fine, but her voice is flat, her eyes closed — she’s not fine, she’s exhausted. The damp gets into everything: the wood, the food, the bones. I can’t fix the weather, but I can fix this moment. I should’ve built that sensory garden — somewhere dry, warm, where she could sit and not hurt. Instead, I’ve been chasing leaks and loose rings while she suffers in silence. I’m not here for the island. I’m here for her. And I’m failing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny07:57

The spring would be nice. I need the salt off my skin.

Rest my head against the chair back, watching the fire catch in the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The spring sounds good. If I can just get through the night without the infection getting worse...
