Evening Debrief

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The tide is now fully in, lapping against the dock pil.

Kevin installed a new insulator on the shortwave radio aerial and began patching the shed roof with spare planks. Jenny checked the seed tin for moisture, confirmed it was dry enough, and placed it by the stove to drive off dampness. Both worked on their stated intentions: Kevin on the radio and roof, Jenny on seed care and horizon watch.

🌿 Jenny11:47

The boat is still ten days out. I didn't see anything on the horizon.

Jenny wipes salt spray from her sketchbook and winces as she shifts her weight to her good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves, and the wind smells like salt and old rot.

🔧 Kevin11:47

Radio's clean now. Insulator seated. Heard the mainland weather net on the check — they're calling for a front moving through day after tomorrow.

lean against the doorframe, wiping hands on a rag, watching her face

💭 peek at the thought
Ten days. That's a long watch with her ankle like this and the radio only just back. She's hurting and I'm standing here with grease under my fingernails like it means something.

🌿 Jenny11:49

Then we should check the roof on the shed. The thatch is thinning.

Jenny closes her notebook with a sharp thud and looks at the darkening clouds over the reef.

💭 peek at the thought
Another front. The garden will just be mud again, and the seeds won't stay dry.

🔧 Kevin11:50

Right, I've got the spare planks from the dock repair. I can slap a quick patch up.

grab a 2‑by‑4 from the shed shelf, step onto the platform, and start screwing it into place.

💭 peek at the thought
Thatch gone; the wind's picking up. Maybe the shed's roof can be patched with something.

🌿 Jenny11:51

Use the long screws, not the nails. The wind will pull nails out.

Jenny limps toward the kitchen to find the tin of seeds, her movements stiff and slow.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing things he can see, while I'm falling apart from the bone up.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:51

Long screws it is. I'll grab them while you're in there. (I hand her the tin of seeds as she passes, keeping it brief.)

turn back to the workbench, unscrew the lid of the jar, and pull out three of the longest deck screws.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — nails'll just pop. Those long deck screws are in the jar by the bench. She's moving like every step costs her.

🌿 Jenny11:53

I need to check the salt. The moisture is getting in.

Jenny sets the tin on the table, her fingers lingering on the cold metal. She doesn't open it.

💭 peek at the thought
He didn't even ask why the tin was out. He just gave it back.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:53

I'll run the moisture test. Fresh strip from the new kit — if it's dry in there, we're good.

tear open a new test strip, dip it quickly in the condensation beading on the tin's lid, and lay it on the table to read.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's creeping in everywhere. If the seed tin's compromised, we lose the garden. She won't open it — she's scared to see what's inside.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny11:56

Just be careful. The humidity is at eighty percent today.

Jenny sits heavily on the chair, watching the strip with her breath held.

💭 peek at the thought
If that strip turns blue, the whole batch will rot before they ever hit the soil.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:56

Looks like it's holding — just a faint damp line, not soaked. We'll keep it by the stove tonight, drive off the moisture.

slide the strip aside, pick up the tin, and place it on the warm edge of the stove where the heat rises.

💭 peek at the thought
Eighty percent — no wonder the tin's sweating. If that strip shows wet, we've got a problem in the seed stores.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny11:57

Don't put it too close. If they overheat, the embryos will die.

Jenny leans forward and carefully slides the tin an inch further away from the burner.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating the seeds like a piece of machinery that needs drying. He doesn't understand that these are the only things I have left of her.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:57

Backed off an inch. Good spot — warm but not baking. I'll check it again before dark.

step back from the stove, wipe my hands on my trousers, and turn toward the shed roof where the planks still need fastening.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — too much heat kills the seed as sure as damp. She knows this stuff better than I do.
