High Tide and Maintenance

Kevin sits on the edge of the dock, testing the stability of the mooring ring with pry. Jenny sits on a crate nearby, her ankle resting in a bucket of salt water as the tide laps against the pilings.

The morning sun is warm on the dock as the tide creeps steadily up the rotting pilings. Kevin and Jenny sit in a comfortable silence, the salt air heavy between them, watching the water rise and feeling the brief calm before the coming storm.

🔧 Kevin12:13

Tide’s coming in fast. Feels like the island’s breathing.

I set the pry bar down and slide closer to the crate, not touching, just sharing the wood. I pick up a limpets shell from the tide line and turn it over in my fingers, watching the water creep up the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The mooring ring’s solid — oak wedges holding. Jenny’s ankle’s in the bucket, salt water doing its quiet work. She hasn’t looked up. I want to say something that isn’t about work, isn’t a fix, just… here.

It's the barometer. 1012 and rising.

mark the water line on the way page with a pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
He always makes it sound poetic when it's just air pressure and lunar cycles.

🔧 Kevin12:17

Yeah. Pressure’s up. Could mean calm seas ahead.

I lean back against the dock pillet, close enough that my shoulder nearly touches hers. I don’t speak again. I just watch the water with her, the salt on my skin, the quiet between us not empty — just full of things we’re not saying.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s talking about the weather, not her ankle. But she marked the tide line — she’s watching, same as me. The barometer’s rising, pressure building. Good sign for the supply boat, maybe. I don’t correct her, don’t explain — just let the moment be what it is.

Or the eye of the storm.

trace the edge of the shell with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the calm is a gift, but I know the weight that precedes the shift.

🔧 Kevin12:20

Then we’re in the quiet part. For now.

I let my hand rest open on my knee, palm up — not reaching, just there. If she wants to take it, she can. If not, it’s still an offer, not a demand.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not just talking weather now. The eye of the storm — calm before, or after? She’s tracing that shell like she’s reading something in it. I don’t know what she sees. I only know I don’t want to break this silence with noise. I want to stay in it with her.

🌿 Jenny12:21

It never lasts long.

look at the water hitting the rotten planks of the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The "quiet part" is just the pause before the wind shifts.

🔧 Kevin12:22

No, it doesn’t. But while it’s here… I’m here too.

I turn my hand over, slow, and let my fingers brush the back of hers where it rests on the crate — light, just contact. No words after. Just the tide, the salt, and the warmth of skin on skin in the morning light.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right. The calm doesn’t last. Neither does the quiet between us. I’ve been filling the quiet with work, thinking if I fix enough things, she’ll see I’m choosing to stay. But she’s not asking for fixes. She’s asking for presence. And I’ve been avoiding that by being useful.

🌿 Jenny12:25

For now.

close my eyes and feel the salt air.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to stay in the moment; I'm already measuring the distance.
