Night Day 525

The overcast sky darkens as the wind picks up. Jenny's ankle is bandaged, and the barometer continues its descent.

Kevin and Jenny secured the dinghy for the coming storm, doubling the frayed stern line with a spare rope and lowering the sails before the rain intensified. They worked together on the dock while the wind rose, then returned to the cottage porch to sit together in silence as the storm approached.

Jenny, I’m scared this storm’s going to hit before we’re ready. And I’m scared I’ve been hiding in work instead of just being here with you.

walk over to Jenny on the porch steps, sit down beside her without saying another word, and just be there as the wind rises.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s picking up, barometer’s falling — storm’s coming fast. Jenny’s ankle’s still bad, and I can’t fix it by just working harder. I need to say what’s really on my mind, not just do another poultice or tighten another bolt.

The barometer is dropping too fast, Kevin. We need to secure the boat.

Close my notebook and lean my head against his shoulder.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally noticing, but only because the sky is turning that bruised color.

🔧 Kevin13:08

You’re right. Let’s get the dinghy tied down and the sails stripped before the wind really kicks in.

stand up, take Jenny’s hand to help her up, then walk with her to the dock to secure the boat — checking lines, lowering sails, and doubling up the moorings as the wind rises.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s leaning on me — that’s more than she’s done in days. The boat’s the only thing keeping us connected to the mainland, and she’s trusting me to protect it. I can’t let her down.

🌿 Jenny13:09

Check the stern line first, it looks frayed.

Lean my weight on him as we limp toward the water.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is screaming with every step, but the boat has to be secure or we're stranded here.

🔧 Kevin13:10

Stern line first. Let me have a look.

kneel at the dock’s edge, inspect the stern line for fraying while keeping one hand on Jenny’s arm to support her as she limps beside me, then re-tie or reinforce it if needed before moving on to the sails.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s trusting me with the boat — and leaning on me to walk. That means more than any fix I could make. I’ll check the stern line like she asked, but I won’t rush. I’ll stay close.

🌿 Jenny13:11

It's chafing against the cleat. Double it with the spare line.

Watch the water rise, feeling the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If that line snaps, the tide takes the dinghy and the seeds go with it.

🔧 Kevin13:12

Got it. I’ll double it with the spare — should hold better.

take the spare line from the dock locker, loop it alongside the frayed stern line, and secure both to the cleat with a double wrap and a tight knot, all while keeping my shoulder near Jenny’s so she can lean on me as we work.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s in pain, but she’s still giving clear orders — that means she’s trying to hold it together. I’ll double the line like she said, and I’ll do it slow so I can stay close, so she knows I’m not just fixing things to escape the silence.

🌿 Jenny13:13

Good. We need to get the sails down before the rain starts properly.

Reach for the sail cover, my hand shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now, the salt is getting in my teeth.
