The Rising Dampness

The kettle begins to whistle on the stove as the pressure in the room drops further. A new drip begins to fall from the shutter into the galvanized bucket.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin15:13

Tea’s on. Come inside when you’re ready.

walk to the cottage, open the door, hang my damp jacket on the hook by the stove, pour two mugs of tea, leave one on the windowsill beside her chair.

💭 peek at the thought
The kettle’s whistle cuts through the damp quiet. Shutter’s leaking again—need to fix that before rot sets in. Jenny’s still on the porch, silent. I should get inside, dry off, and see if she wants tea. Or just sit with her. Either way, I’m not leaving her out here alone in the rain.

🌿 Jenny15:15

I'm coming. Just... one minute.

Close the notebook carefully, rub the throbbing ankle, and limp toward the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by pliers, and the salt is everywhere today. I just want to finish this drawing.

🔧 Kevin15:15

(say nothing, just nod and set the second mug on the table where she can reach it)

pull out the chair for her, sit opposite with my own mug, wrap both hands around the tin, wait

💭 peek at the thought
She’s moving slow. Ankle’s still bad. I’ll let her set the pace.

🌿 Jenny15:23

It's going to be bad, isn't it?

Sit down heavily, wincing as the weight shifts, and stare at the steam rising from the tea.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping so fast. I can feel it in my joints, especially in this infection. If this storm hits hard, the garden is going to wash out again.

🔧 Kevin15:23

I’m not going anywhere unless you want me to.

reach across the table, not to touch her ankle, but to rest my hand flat on the wood between our mugs—steady, open, not pushing.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not asking about the weather. She’s asking if I’m going to leave when the supply boat comes—or if I’ll stay because I have to, not because I want to. I’ve thought this a hundred times. Now she’s saying it out loud.

🌿 Jenny15:25

I know.

Reach for the mug, fingers trembling against the warm ceramic, and look out the window at the rain-blurred ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin is being quiet. The quiet is worse than the talking. I'm so tired of being the one who has to hold everything together.

🔧 Kevin15:25

(say nothing)

watch the rain streak the glass with her, let the silence hold us until the kettle cools.

💭 peek at the thought
She didn’t pull away. That’s enough for now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny15:27

I'm scared of the rain.

Take a slow sip of the tea, the heat spreading through my chest, and watch the wind catch the trees.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in seven days, I'm out of gauze. I can't let the seeds rot because of this leg.

🔧 Kevin15:27

I’ll keep the lantern lit. And the radio on low—just in case.

stand slowly, walk to the shelf, turn the shortwave to Tom’s frequency, volume down so it’s just a breath of static, then return to my seat, pick up my mug, and sit without speaking.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not just talking about the storm. She’s talking about what the rain brings—isolation, delay, the feeling that the island is closing in. I’ve felt it too. But I won’t name it. I’ll just be here.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny15:29

Keep it on.

Lean back, the chair creaking under me, and watch the shadows dance in the candlelight.

💭 peek at the thought
The static sounds like the sea. It's better than the silence. I need to stop thinking about the infection and the seed tin.
