The Storm Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated tin roof, and the wind picks up from the seaward.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

(softly, not looking up) Wind’s kicking up. I’ll secure the generator lashings—be back in two shakes.

stride to the generator, grab the ratchet straps from the shed, and begin tightening them down over the unit, anchoring to the cottage’s corner posts.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm’s here early—wind’s already lifting the loose shingle on the generator cover. I should’ve lashed it last night. Jenny’s still on the porch, sketchbook in lap, ankle wrapped. She hasn’t moved. I can’t just bark orders; she’d shut down. Better to move quiet, let her see I’m handling it without making her brace for it.

Watch your footing, the rocks are turning.

Closes the notebook and tucks it under her arm to protect the paper from the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked. He doesn't move fast enough for these gusts; the stones will be slick now.

(without breaking stride, voice low over the rising wind) Thanks. I’ll go round by the goat track—keep the sketchbook dry.

veer left off the porch, cut toward the woods edge, and begin the steeper, sheltered path uphill past the old cairns, pulling the storm lantern from my belt as the light fades under the thickening clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s warning me about the path—smart. The tide’s coming in fast; the lower rocks near the spring intake will be slick with kelp now. I’ll take the inland track, higher ground, even if it’s longer. Don’t want to slip and waste time she’s already worrying about.

🌿 Jenny14:47

Take the lantern, the light is failing.

Stands up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and moves toward the kitchen stove to check the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The goat track is a mess of mud when it pours. If he slips there, I'm not climbing down into the way.

🔧 Kevin14:47

(glancing back, keeping my tone even) Got it. I’ll have it back when I’m done.

take the lantern from her hand, squeeze her shoulder briefly, then turn and hurry up the wooded path, the beam cutting through the murk as I head for the generator shed.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s trying to be useful, but that ankle’s still raw. I saw her wince—she shouldn’t be putting weight on it yet. The stove’s her domain; let her tend the water. I’ll take the lantern—she’s right, the light’s going fast—and get those lashings done before the wind really bites.

🌿 Jenny14:49

Be careful, the shale is coming loose.

Puts the kettle on the stove and watches the first heavy drops hit the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked to the bone. That path is a death trap when the clouds break.
