The Storm Surges

Rain lashes the kitchen window as the wind picks up from the west. Kevin monitors the barometer while Jenny sits at the table, watching the damp seed packets curl edges and checking the spreading red streaks on her ankle.

The rain has intensified into a heavy squall, drumming relentlessly against the roof of the cottage. The air is thick with the smell of wet earth and salt, and the barometer continues its drop, signaling a worsening front. While the tide is receding quickly, exposing the slick rocks of the pools, the rising wind makes movement treacherous.

The barometer's climbing, but this changes everything.

Press the cool metal of the water test kit against the swollen ankle, noting the heat radiating from the infection track.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's climbing now—979 and inching toward 980—but that red streak has reached my groin. Infected tissue moving faster than I can document it. Kevin's still at the window, mechanical salvation again.

Barometer's 975 and rising. Wind's backed west-northwest. Another hour it'll drop below 35 sustained.

Check the grab bag lashing on the porch, then pour two mugs of coffee — one black, one with the last of the powdered milk — and set hers on the table beside the seed packets.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the streaks, not the barometer. The water test kit against her skin — she's measuring fever with a cleanliness strip. Clever. Desperate. The engine's running but the wind's still howling. 0540 tide window is gone. Next slack's 1810. She won't last twelve hours at this rate.

🌿 Jenny01:34

Let the wind blow. I need to get these seeds dry before the mold finishes them.

Reach for the coffee mug, fingers trembling, and use a tweezers to carefully peel a damp proven seed away from the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching the wind speed while I'm watching a fire climb up my leg. If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I won't be able to walk to the radio.

Seeds'll keep. You won't if that leg goes septic. 1810 slack tide. We leave then, wind or no wind.

Walk to the radio, key the mic, and call the mainland coastguard on Channel 16 — "Coastguard, Coastguard, this is Sorrel Island caretaker, MEDICO request, female 38, spreading cellulitis lower leg tracking to groin, last antibiotics 18 hour

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands are shaking hard enough to rattle the tweezers. The infection's eating her strength. She's fighting for seeds that won't matter if she dies here. I need to get the dinghy ready — properly ready — for the 1810 window. Engine mount's solid, fuel's clean, but the bilge pump's never been tested under load.
