Midday Work
Kevin is at the dock, working on the mooring ring; Jenny is at the north cliffs, attempting to treat her ankle.
Kevin carefully hammered cedar wedges into the loose mooring ring mortise, securing the dock against the rising tide. Jenny spent the morning on the north cliffs, attempting to document the local flora but became distracted as the air pressure continued to drop.
You stand at the dock, the wet wood beneath your boots. You apply fresh epoxy to the wedges, hoping the bond will hold against the rising tide.
Kevin — hold position, pressing the wedges firmly into the mortise with my palm, waiting for the epoxy to begin setting, eyes on the rising water lapping at the dock’s edge.

Kevin — wipe epoxy-smeared hands on my trousers, straighten slow, test the mooring ring once more with a boot against the base — solid — then turn toward the cottage path.

You sit on the cliff ledge, your ankle throbbing. You try to apply a new poultice but the pain forces you to pause.
Jenny — lean against the cool stone and wince as the weight shifts.

Just a few more minutes.
Pull the notebook from my pocket and sketch the jagged edge of the cliff-face.
