The Storm Breaks

The wind has reached a gale, and the rain is a horizontal curtain. The tide is at its low, exposing the tide pools and the sandbar.

Kevin re-dressed Jenny's ankle with a mint and sea beet poultice, then secured the garden tarp and moved seed trays to the cottage porch. Jenny stayed on the porch, watching the rain and tending to her ankle. Kevin checked the shortwave radio for a weather update after drying off inside the cottage.

🌿 Jenny20:19

Jenny — wraps the salt poultice tighter around her ankle, winces as the fabric touches the raw skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops any further, the boat isn't coming, and this leg is going to rot off me.

🔧 Kevin20:19

Let me redo that poultice. Hold still.

walk to spring, fill bucket with fresh water, return to porch, gently remove old poultice, rinse Jenny’s ankle with clean water, crush mint sprigs with sea beet leaves, reapply poultice loosely, secure with clean cloth strip.

💭 peek at the thought
The poultice is biting her skin—too much salt, not enough mint. I should rinse it with fresh water, reapply with crushed mint. The storm won’t wait, but her ankle can’t take this. I’ll do it fast, then get back to securing the dinghy before it tears loose.

🌿 Jenny20:21

The salt is stinging.

Leans her head against the cottage wall, watching the rain wash over the half-finished garden.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are shaking from the cold, but he's gentler than me.

Mint’s the fix. More leaf, less salt. I’ll get it right.

crush fresh mint sprigs with a pinch of sea beet, mix to paste, apply gently to ankle, rewrap with dry cloth strip, then run to garden and secure loose tarp corners with timber strips and rope.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—straight sea beet’s too harsh. Need more mint, less beet. And the garden’s drowning; I’ll tarp what’s left after this.

🌿 Jenny20:23

Don't let the seeds get wet.

Watches him battle with the tarp in the wind, clutching her knees to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying so hard to fix what the island is just eating alive.

🔧 Kevin20:23

Tin’s covered. Trays in the shed need moving. I’ll get them.

finish battening garden tarp, sprint to shed, grab seed trays, carry them to cottage porch, set on dry floor away from draft, check tin seal, return to Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s cold and wet, huddled on the porch while I wrestle canvas. The seed tin’s on the porch table under the overhang—should be dry. But the trays in the shed aren’t. Need to move them inside before the roof leaks.

🌿 Jenny20:25

Come inside, you're freezing.

Pull the doorization against the wind, watching the garden vanish into the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't come, we'll be out of antibiotics before the month turns.

🔧 Kevin20:25

Yeah. Just need to dry off first.

step inside cottage, shake off water, hang wet jacket by stove, pour hot water into mug, stand by stove to warm hands, then pick up shortwave radio and check for weather update on supply boat frequency.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—I’m soaked through, hands numb. Inside, I’ll warm up, check the radio for weather, then see if the mooring held. The tide’s low now, but the swell’s still running.
