← Day 537

the keeper's cottage · day 537 · night

The storm breaks

The rain is now a steady downpour, and the sound of the cottage grows louder as the water pools beneath the floor.

The rain lashes against the cottage with a heavy, rhythmic drumming, and the wind howls from the west. Kevin has crawled out from beneath the sill, dripping and shivering, but has managed to stem the immediate leak from seeping through the floorboards. Jenny sits on the bench, her ankle submerged in the basin of vinegar and salt water, grimacing at the sting as the tide continues to rise against the cottage foundation.

🌿 Jenny02:13

The water's coming in again.

mix vinegar and salt into the basin; prepare the ankle for the soak.

💭 peek at the thought
If the foundation shifts, the whole structure goes. I can't let the notebook get ruined.

I’ll patch it from underneath. Give me the tarp and the crowbar— I’ll get under the sill and seal the joint before it spreads.

crawl under cottage: lift shutter joint with crowbar, slide tarp under leak, press into crack, weight with stones from garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The leak’s back under the cottage—water’s finding the old crack again. Jenny’s prepping the soak; I need to stop the drip before it ruins the floor or feeds the rats.

🌿 Jenny02:15

Be careful with the stones, they're slick.

hand him the tarp and the crowbar; watch the water line on the floorboards.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going into the mud in that rain. He's going to catch something cold.

🔧 Kevin02:15

Got it. Holding pressure. Keep the basin ready—I’ll know when it’s sealed.

shove tarp into gap, fold edges up, jam cedar wedges from porch repair into sides, stamp down with heel to compress.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp’ll hold if I wedge it tight—water’s rising fast, but the joint’s exposed now. I can feel the seepage under my palm; it’s cold and steady.

🌿 Jenny02:17

The basin is ready. Don't stay under too long.

pour the vinegar into the water; wait for the dripping to stop.

💭 peek at the thought
If those wedges don't hold, the pressure will just tear the tarp through.

🔧 Kevin02:17

Almost… there. Just need to seat it tight.

twist tarp tight, drive two more wedges deep, lean full weight on the joint to seal.

💭 peek at the thought
The drip’s slowing—tarp’s holding, wedges are biting. I can feel the pressure equalizing. One more push and it should stop.

🌿 Jenny02:19

It's holding. Get out from there before the floor shifts.

watch the basin for a leak; rub the ankle despite the throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but the wood is groaning under the weight.

🔧 Kevin02:19

Out. Backing slow—don’t want to drag the tarp loose.

crawl backward out from under cottage, pull tarp edges up with me, lay flat on gravel, catch breath.

💭 peek at the thought
The drip’s stopped. Water’s pooling but not rising under the floor now. I need to get out before the wet timbers flex and shift the seal.
