Afternoon work and weather watch
Kevin is at the cottage checking the radio and shutters; Jenny is at the garden inspecting seedlings and the sea beet rows.
The warm rain continues to fall in rhythmic bursts, drumming against the cottage roof and soaking the thirsty garden soil. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the southern flats near the tide pools. Inside, the air is heavy with the scent of drying herbs and damp earth, while the Yanmar cylinder head sits on the kitchen table, a silent reminder of unfinished work.
You test the shortwave — static hiss, no voice. The shutter leak drips into the galvanized bucket, steady as a clock. You wedge a timber strip tighter against the frame and listen to the wind rise in the eaves.
Kevin — check the barometer reading and secure the porch shutters with the spare timber strips.

Kevin — pick up Tom's letter, turn it over in my hands, then set it back down unopened. Walk to the porch and scan the horizon for the supply boat's running lights.

You crouch beside the seed trays, magnifier in hand. The damping-off fuzz has not spread past the bagged cells. Sea beet seedlings along the windward row show salt-burn tips — you note which survive.
(quietly, to the plants) Hold on, then.
Make detailed field sketch: "Sea beet salt stress survival patterns - Day 542" in garden notebook, marking surviving seedlings with dots and noting which show toxin accumulation in leaf margins.

(a sharp intake of breath) way it.
Walk back to the cottage, limping, to get the first aid kit and a bowl of clean water.
