The Storm Breaks

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain lashing against the roof.

Kevin checked the rain tank and overflow channel, finding both holding against the rising rain. Jenny inspected the seed tin, carefully removing mold from viable seeds with tweezers, while the storm intensified beyond forecast.

🌿 Jenny07:07

The rain is coming harder than the forecast said. We should check the tank again.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, pulling the seed tin closer to the stove to inspect the mold under the light.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing again; the salt water didn't do enough to stop the heat.

Aye. Overflow channel held last storm. But if this keeps up, we'll want eyes on it.

walk to the back wall and check the rain tank gauge, then step out onto the porch to inspect the overflow channel

💭 peek at the thought
Tank was full at last check — 400 litres. Rain's heavier than forecast means the overflow might run before morning. Should check the channel we cleared.

🌿 Jenny07:09

Don't stay out long. The stone gets slick and the wind is shifting.

way picks up the tweezers and begins carefully peeling a layer of white mold away from a cluster of enough seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out in that rain? My ankle is already pulsing like a drum.

Channel's clear. Tank taking it. Back in a minute.

step back inside, shake off wet boots, and set the kettle on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the stone. Wind shifting southeast — that's the direction that drives spray up against the north wall. Tank's full, overflow running clear. Good.
