Morning sorting and tide watch
Jenny sits on the porch step carefully scraping mold from the heirloom seed tin with a damp cloth. Kevin checks the barometer and notes the rising tide while the warm rain patters against the tin roof.
The warm rain continues in rhythmic pulses, drumming against the corrugated roof of the cottage. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the southern reefs and the sandbars. Kevin wakes with a stiff back from the night's humidity, while Jenny shifts her ankle, the infection throbbing in the damp heat.
Tide’s coming in slow. Wall’s dry enough for tar if you want to hold the cloth.
walk to the rain tank, check the tap, then pull the tar bucket and brush from under the porch.

I'll take five minutes. Just need to finish the vinegar on the edge first.
dip the cloth into the vinegar and scrub the rim of the seed tin, then stand up wincing as the ankle throbs at the movement.

Vinegar's good. Kills the roots. Leave the tin in the sun after, let it breathe.
set the tar bucket on the porch floor, brush propped against the wall, then crouch to unwrap the ankle brace and check the swelling under the gauze.

I'll leave it on the bench once I've cleared the white stuff.
wipe the excess vinegar from the tin with a dry rag, then set it down on the stone enough to watch the rain.
