The Height of the Storm

The wind continues to howl from the west, and the leak in the shutter begins to drip steady water onto the floor.

The rain intensifies, turning into a rhythmic lashing against the cottage roof as the wind shifts from the west. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of damp earth and wood smoke. The barometer continues its rapid descent, signaling a worsening storm, while the tide begins to turn at its lowest point, exposing the slick rocks of the island's southern edge.

🌿 Jenny10:54

Kevin, the bucket. The shutter is giving way.

Grunts in pain, Jenny shifts weight off her swollen ankle and reaches for a metal pot to catch the leak.

💭 peek at the thought
That drip is going to ruin the floorboards if I don't move something, but my leg is screaming.

🔧 Kevin10:54

Stay off it. I've got the bucket.

grab the galvanized bucket from beside the stove and set it under the shutter leak, then take the pot from her hands and guide her back to the chair

💭 peek at the thought
The shutter's failing and she's moving on a wrecked ankle. Two problems, one me. Bucket first, then her back in that chair.

🌿 Jenny10:56

I'm fine. way... I need to check the irrigation.

Slumps into the chair, watching the water hit the bucket while her ankle throbs in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to help, but the seeds are still in that tin and the garden is drying out.

🔧 Kevin10:56

Irrigation holds. You hold the chair.

press a hand to her shoulder to keep her seated, then grab the tin mug from the table and fill it from the water basin, setting it in front of her

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. Ankle's swollen, fever's barely broken, and she's talking irrigation in a storm. The garden can drown for all I care — she stays in that chair.

🌿 Jenny10:58

Thanks. The pressure... it's dropping too fast for thisseason.

Takes the mug with shaking hands, staring at the steam rising from the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't plant tomorrow, the mold will just win in that tin.

🔧 Kevin10:58

Barometer's 980. Steady for now.

pull the spare tarp from the porch pile and move to the south window, checking the batten strips are still tight against the frame

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the storm better than the barometer. Hands shaking — fever or fear or both. She's seen the notebook entries same as me. Knows what 979 and falling means with wind west.

🌿 Jenny11:00

It's never steady enough when the garden is half-way.

Takes a slow sip of the warm water, eyes fixed on the seed tin sitting on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
980 isn't steady enough when the wind is screaming like that.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:00

The tin's dry. Seeds are viable. Garden's not going anywhere.

turn from the window and pull the chair closer to her, sitting down heavily, the tin mug warming my own hands

💭 peek at the thought
Halfway. That's the word that sticks. Garden halfway, irrigation halfway, sensory garden never started. She's carrying the weight of every unfinished thing on this island and her ankle's paying for it.
