The Rising Pressure

Kevin sits on the edge of the bed watching the barometer needle as it begins to dip. Jenny lies still under the sheets, her breathing shallow as the heavy, dry-season air settles in the small room.

Kevin repaired the garden tarp's shredded south edge and inspected beds for salt damage while Jenny debrided her ankle wound and took her final doxycycline dose. The barometer held steady at 981 hPa, easing immediate storm concerns.

You awake?

reach out and press the back of my hand to her forehead, light as I can

💭 peek at the thought
The needle's moving. Not fast, but steady down. 979 to 978 in the time it took to piss and boil water. She's warm but not burning — that's something. The infection's not raging, but it's not gone either. Barometer says weather's coming. Not the kind that brings rain. The kind that brings wind and swell and cuts the supply boat off for another two weeks. I need to get the generator running clean before the tank wax sets again. And the dock lines need checking — last storm took the starboard breast line clean off the cleat.

I'm awake. Check the barometer.

Reach out to touch his hand against my skin, wincing as the throbbing in my ankle spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If the storm hits, I won't be able to walk.

🔧 Kevin11:06

978 and falling. Slow. Generator's cold — need to swap the fuel filter before the wax sets hard. Dock lines held last night but the starboard breast line's on borrowed time. Water tank's full. Garden tarp's shredded on the south side.

sit up, swing legs over the edge, and reach for the thermometer on the bedside table

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking. Good. The wince tells me the ankle's still angry — antibiotics aren't magic, and three days of fever took more out of her than she'll admit. Barometer's at 978 and drifting. That's not a front passing through. That's something settling in.

🌿 Jenny11:06

Fix the tarp first. I'll check the generator when I can move.

way up slowly, pushing the blankets back to look at the swollen, angry skin of my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden is going to be ruined if I don't get out there, but my leg is screaming.

🔧 Kevin11:08

You're not walking on that. Not today. I'll do the tarp. You stay here, keep the leg up, take your temp in an hour.

stand, grab my boots from the floor, and pull them on without lacing them tight

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — south wall tarp's the first thing the wind'll take, and if it goes the garden beds flood with salt. But she can barely put weight on that ankle, and the generator filter's a fifteen-minute job if my hands don't shake. She'll try to hobble out there anyway. Stubborn as the Yanmar's old injection pump.

🌿 Jenny11:08

The tarp won't fix itself, Kevin. The wind is coming.

Reach for the tweezers on the nightstand, my hand shaking slightly as I look at the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's helping me, but he's just watching the garden rot.
