The Heavy Morning Air

Kevin sits on the edge of the porch, watching a wooden crate bob in the grey surf of the receding tide. Jenny sits in a chair nearby, her ankle wrapped in clean gauze while the heavy air hangs still between them.

Kevin retrieved the come-along and heavy line from the dock shed while Jenny took her temperature. The shortwave radio crackled to life with a faint voice through the static as the tide continued falling.

🔧 Kevin11:52

Crate's drifting toward the north reef. Low tide in forty minutes. If it grounds there, we'll need the come-along to drag it clear. You stay put. I'll get the gear.

walk to the dock shed, retrieve the come-along and a coil of heavy weather line, check the line for chafe, then walk back toward the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping fast. That crate's been riding the swell for hours — might ground on the reef near the north piling if the wind holds. Need to get the come-along and a heaving line ready before low water. Jenny's ankle looks better; heat's down, no red line tracking. She's quiet. Too quiet. But she's eating, keeping fluids down. That's something.

Don't go out yourself. The rocks are slick with kelp.

stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts my ankle, and grab my

💭 peek at the thought
If that crate hits the way, the salt will get into the wood before we even get to opening it.

🔧 Kevin11:54

I'm not climbing the reef. Just setting a line from the dock. You sit back down before you tear something.

set the come-along and line on the porch rail, press one hand lightly on her shoulder to guide her back toward the chair

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the kelp. North reef's treacherous on a dropping tide — weed-covered rock shelves, no purchase. But she shouldn't be putting weight on that ankle, not yet. The lymph nodes were soft this morning, but the skin's still tight. She's stubborn. Always has been.

🌿 Jenny11:54

I can sit, Kevin.

push his hand away gently, sink into the chair, and reach for my way.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hovering like I'm made of glass today.

🔧 Kevin11:56

Temperature first. Then I go.

reach for the thermometer on the porch table, hold it out to her

💭 peek at the thought
She won't take help. Not even the small kind. Her fingers brushing mine — calloused, salt-dry, warm. She's been running hot for days. The antibiotics are working, but the fever took more out of her than she'll admit. I should check her temperature again before I head to the dock.

🌿 Jenny11:56

Fine.

take the thermometer, place it under my tongue, and watch the tide pull away from the shore.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever is back up, I'll have to call the boat.

🔧 Kevin11:58

…

stand still beside her chair, eyes on the crate's slow drift, one hand resting on the porch rail

💭 peek at the thought
37.1 if we're lucky. Maybe 37.3. Anything under 37.5 and I'll breathe easier. The crate's drifting closer to the reef — current's setting north, pushing it toward the piling void we chocked last week. If it hits hard, it could undo the shim work. Need to get a line on it before it grounds. But I'll wait the minute the thermometer needs.

🌿 Jenny11:58

Jenny — keep my eyes closed, counting the beats of my heart against the throb in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence on this island is heavier than the heat sometimes.

🔧 Kevin12:00

…

wait, weight shifting from boot to boot, not reaching for it

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting. Calming herself. Or counting the seconds until she can push me away again. The thermometer beeps — soft, sharp in the quiet. She pulls it out, reads it before I can.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:00

Jenny — breathe through my nose, the sharp scent of salt and drying wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's waiting for me to break so he can Fix it.
