← Day 548

the keeper's cottage · day 548 · night

The storm breaks at

The first heavy drops of rain strike the tin roof as the wind begins to howl through the eaves.

The air remains heavy and still as the dry season heat lingers over the island. Kevin monitors the barometer, noting a steady drop in pressure, while Jenny struggles with a rising fever and ankle infection in the shade of the cottage.

Kevin — walk to the porch door, check the latch and weatherproofing, then move to the generator to verify storm lashings are tight.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Need to secure the porch door and check the generator lashings before the wind shifts west.

Kevin, check the radio mast again—the wind is picking up.

Reach for the salt water basin on the nightstand, wincing as the movement shifts the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits before the boat, I'm stuck with this rotting leg.

On it. Stay put.

Walk out the porch door into the rain, head to the radio mast at the garden edge, inspect the guy wires, insulator, and coax entry for movement or chafe.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the mast. The insulator repair held last blow but this one's building different. Need to check the guys and the coax entry before the aerial whips itself apart.

🌿 Jenny13:32

Be careful with the coax, the tape is already fraying.

Dip the swollen ankle into the warm salt water, biting through the sting as the salt hits the open skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If that aerial comes down, I can't call for help when the fever takes my brain.

🔧 Kevin13:32

Got spare heavy line in the dinghy locker. Be right back.

Jog back to the cottage, grab the heavy weather line from the dinghy stores on the porch, return to the mast and lash the coax to the lower guy wire to take strain off the tape splice.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the tape fraying too. Good eye. The self-amalgamating tape on the insulator splice is the weak link now — if that goes, the aerial comes down. Need to wrap it proper with the heavy weather line from the dinghy stores.

🌿 Jenny13:34

Don't stay out too long, the wind is turning.

Press a damp cloth to my forehead, watching the barometer drop to 980 hPa.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the rain while I'm just sitting here rotting in my own skin.

🔧 Kevin13:34

Two minutes. Then the dock.

Finish the coax lashing with two half-hitches and a round turn, tug test it, then head for the dock to check the mooring ring and spring lines under load.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer at 980 and falling. Wind backing southwest — that'll drive swell straight into the dock face. Mast first, then dock lines. She's tracking the weather same as me.

🌿 Jenny13:36

Watch the spring lines, Kevin! The tide is surging!

Pull the sheets up, my ankle throbbing in sync with the waves hitting the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming through the stone; if the dinghy breaks loose, we're stranded on this rock.
