MIDDAY

The storm front arrives, turning the rain into a downpour, and the wind begins to howl through the gaps in the cottage shutter.

Kevin battened the leaking shutter with a spare tarp and timber strips, reinforcing the lower hinge with a through-bolt while Jenny held the nut. Jenny boiled water and sterilized a needle, then drained the infected ankle wound and applied a fresh sea beet and mint poultice.

Kevin — grab the spare tarp and timber strips from the porch, batten the shutter gaps on the windward side.

💭 peek at the thought
Weather's moving faster than the barometer said. Shutter gaps mean the porch framing's still breathing — need to batten it before the glass goes.

🌿 Jenny13:52

Hold the tarp tight, Kevin! Don't let the water get under the frame!

Limp to the kitchen, clutching my ankle, and boil water for the needle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if those shutters fail, the salt will ruin the morphology sketches.

🔧 Kevin13:54

Got it. Feed the stove, I've got the batten.

Pull the tarp drum-tight across the shutter frame, drive the timber strips home with the mallet, screw them through into sound wood. Check the lower hinge — if the cedar wedge walked, the frame'll rack.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on that ankle. Shouldn't be. But she's right about the tarp — water under the frame rots the sill in a week.

🌿 Jenny13:54

Watch the bottom screw! It's pulling under the wind!

Set the pot on the stove and watch the water bubble over the flame.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way gives, the whole shutter comes in, and I'll be sitting in the dark.

🔧 Kevin13:56

Backing it with a through-bolt. Hold the nut inside.

Drill through the shutter stile and frame at the bottom hinge, drive a 10mm stainless bolt through with washer and nyloc, Jenny holding the nut on the kitchen side. Snug it, don't crush the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
Bottom screw's in punk wood. Wind's got leverage on the full shutter height — it'll rip the lot out if I don't back it.

🌿 Jenny13:56

It's holding! way don't let it slip!

Tighten the nut with the wrench, leaning my weight on my good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is groaning under the pressure; if that bolt shears, the whole thing is gone.

🔧 Kevin13:58

Good. Done. Sit.

Tap the bolt head flush with the mallet, wipe rain off my face, step back to check the whole shutter line for daylight gaps.

💭 peek at the thought
Bolt's bitten. Shutter's solid now. Wind can flap the tarp but the frame won't walk. She's white-knuckling that wrench on a leg that shouldn't take weight.

🌿 Jenny13:58

I'm sitting. My ankle is on fire.

Drop onto the chair by the stove, nursing my leg, and watch the way drop.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming through the stone now; if that bolt holds, the kitchen is soaked anyway.
