The Eye of the Storm

The wind howls at a higher pitch, and the barometer continues its slow descent. The tide begins its slow recede, leaving behind debris tangled in the lower rocks.

Kevin sealed the kitchen window frames with epoxy and putty while monitoring the shortwave radio, which yielded only static and a fragmented broadcast. Jenny sorted the damp heirloom seeds on paper towels, separating viable stock from mold-damaged packets, and moved the seed tin to the wood stove for warmth.

The way is falling, Kevin. Get the charts away from the window.

Pick up the seed tin from the table and move it to the center of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If that way hits again, the seeds on the sill will be gone before they even sprout.

Already on it.

Walk to the shelf by the window, grab the chart case and sextant box, carry them to the table away from the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's still dropping. She's right about the charts — wind'll shove rain through that window seal if it hasn't already.

Check the seal on the window frames. I don't want water in the kitchen.

Open the tin of seeds and begin de-spreading the damp heirloom varieties on the paper towels.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but his hands are still shaking. He's worried about the engine again.

Checking.

Walk to the kitchen window, press my palm against the frame feeling for draft, run fingers along the putty lines checking for cracks or gaps where water could drive through.

💭 peek at the thought
Window frames held last blow but the putty's old. One good gust and we're mopping.

🌿 Jenny04:17

It's coming in hard. Keep the radio on in case.

Spread out a handful of heirloom seeds on the dry paper towel, separating the viable ones from the shriveled ones.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to plummet. If the surge doesn't hold, the garden wall is gone by morning.

Radio's on. Aerial's the weak point.

Turn the shortwave on, twist the squelch until the static settles, set it to Channel 16 and the trust's working frequency, then walk back to the window with a putty knife and the tub of epoxy to patch any fresh gaps.

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's the only line out. If the aerial holds.
