MORNING

The heat begins to rise as the pressure fails to drop further into the grey morning.

Kevin poured coffee and handed over the newspaper-wrapped heirloom seed packets. Jenny inspected the seed tin, scraped mold from the rim, and confirmed the separated seeds were dry and viable. The barometer continued rising steadily from 980 hPa.

Jenny — stand up slowly, wincing, and take the heirloom seed tin from the high shelf to inspect the mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get this ankle moving, the seeds will rot in that tin just like me.

Morning.

Set the kettle on the stove and light the burner under it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the tin I already sorted. Either she doesn't trust my work or she needs something to do with her hands. Her ankle's holding weight but the wince says it's not right yet.

🌿 Jenny15:32

The humidity is climbing again.

open the seed tin carefully and look for new white patches on the heirloom seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He hasn't even looked at my leg. Just the kettle.

Barometer's at 980 and rising. Should be dropping if a low's coming in. This isn't normal.

Pour hot water into the two tin mugs, drop a spoon of coffee in each, and set one on the table beside her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — air feels thick, pressure holding where it shouldn't. The tin was clean when I resealed it yesterday. If she finds mold now, it's new growth overnight. That means the damp's in the walls, not just the tin.

🌿 Jenny15:34

The island is holding its breath. Everything does before the break.

take a sip of the coffee and use a pencil to scrape a bit of mold off the edge of the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
It's rising because the air is trapped, just like this infection.

🔧 Kevin15:36

The tin's compromised at the rim. Seeds inside are dry — I separated them yesterday. Viable packets wrapped in newspaper on the top shelf.

Take the other mug, blow across the steam, and drink. Watch her ankle as she shifts weight.

💭 peek at the thought
She's scraping mold off the tin edge — not the seeds. The tin itself. That's the rust eating through the lid seal. I should've waxed it proper when I had the chance. She's watching the weather like she reads engines: feels the change before the gauges show it.

🌿 Jenny15:36

You should have asked.

set the tin down with a sharp thud and look up at the top shelf for the newspaper-wrapped packets.

💭 peek at the thought
He moved them while I was sleeping? He didn't say a word.

🔧 Kevin15:38

You're right. I should have.

Set my mug down. Reach up and pull down the newspaper-wrapped packets, hold them out to her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
Sharp thud. She's angry — not at the tin, at me. "Should have asked" means she wanted the choice: to sort them herself, to decide what's viable, to touch the life we're trying to keep. I took the work from her hands because my hands are faster, surer. I keep doing that.
