← Day 553

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday dock and garden work

Kevin is at the dock cutting and fitting a second greenheart sister plank for the north piling; Jenny is in the garden checking seedling trays and re-staking tomato plants against the rising wind.

Kevin finishes the structural repairs on the dock, ensuring the mooring rings are secure for the upcoming supply boat arrival. He returns to the cottage to check in via the shortwave radio, finding only static and logging the silence. Jenny spends the midday in the garden, tending to the heirloom seedlings and de-briding her ankle while monitoring the mold in the seed tin.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You crouch in the salt spray, mallet in hand, driving the tapered greenheart shim under the new sister plank at the north piling base. The tide laps at your boots, higher than the charts said. Each blow seats the timber tighter. You check the through-bolt alignment — four 150mm stainless, holes pre-drilled. The piling groans as the swell hits.

🔧 Kevin17:34

Kevin — drive the last two through-bolts home with the heavy wrench, check torque by feel, then stand and wipe salt from my eyes. Walk back to the cottage for water and the radio check-in.

💭 peek at the thought
The piling's not going to last another winter. Maybe not another month if the boat's crane hooks hard. But it'll hold for tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin17:38

Kevin — walk up the path to the cottage, pour a mug from the tank, and sit at the shortwave. Power on. Tune to the trust frequency. Log whatever comes through.

💭 peek at the thought
Water first. Then the radio. The schedule doesn't care about tide or rot.

🔧 Kevin17:42

Kevin — log the silence in the radio notebook — date, time, frequency, conditions, no contact. Set the radio to scan. Walk to the garden to find Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Nothing but static on the scheduled frequency. The barometer's still falling. They're not coming tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You move down the garden rows, ankle propped on the wheelbarrow, checking each tomato stake. The wind has shifted west, gusting through the shade cloth. Three basil plants are gone, chewed to the nub. You re-tie the tomato leaders with soft twine, gentle on the salt-stressed stems, and peer into the seed trays — damping-off fuzz creeps along two more lettuce cells.

🌿 Jenny17:32

Not today, please not today.

pull the infected lettuce seedlings and toss them into the waste bucket.

💭 peek at the thought
The mold is moving faster than I am. If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'll have nothing left to save.

🌿 Jenny17:36

Jenny — walk back to the cottage to get the seed tin from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. 981 hPa. That storm is coming, and I haven't even secured the garden tarp.

🌿 Jenny17:40

Jenny — open the seed tin and check for new mold.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. If that tarp rips now, the whole season's work goes into the salt.
