The Calm Before the Gale

The two of them gather as the first gust of wind finally picks up, carrying the scent of rain and the heavy salt air.

Kevin moved the heirloom seed tin indoors to protect it from rising humidity and prepared first aid supplies. Jenny began debriding her infected ankle using a sterilized needle while Kevin monitored the spreading red line.

The sky is turning. We need to get the tin inside before the rain really starts.

Stands up slowly, wincing and clutching her ankle, then walks to the porch to check the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the boat doesn't come tomorrow, the seeds will be lost to the rot.

I'll get it. You sit.

Walk to the porch, lift the seed tin, carry it inside to the kitchen shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. Ankle's worse than she's letting on. Tin's heavy — she'll try to lift it anyway.

🌿 Jenny18:08

Just keep it away from the stove. The humidity is already rising.

Sinks back into the chair, breathing through her teeth as she begins to unwrap the bandage on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful, but he doesn't see the mold creeping on the inner lid.

Water's on the stove if you need it hot.

Set the tin on the kitchen shelf away from the stove, then pull the first aid kit from the cupboard and set it on the table near her chair.

💭 peek at the thought
She's debriding it herself. Good. Means she's still tracking it. But the breath-holding says pain's up.

🌿 Jenny18:10

I'm fine. way need to clean the grit.

Reaches for the antiseptic and the tweezers, looking at the swollen, angry skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get this infection under, I won't be able to walk to the area tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin18:10

Tweezers broke. Tips gone. Use the fine needle from the kit — sterilize it in the flame.

Pull the first aid kit open, take out the fine suture needle and a small bottle of isopropyl alcohol, set them on the table beside her. Light a match and hold it under the needle tip.

💭 peek at the thought
Tweezers are snapped. She doesn't know. And "I'm fine" means it's not fine.

🌿 Jenny18:12

I know. I just need to get the debris out before the swelling worsens.

Takes the needle from the flame, waits for it to cool, and begins to carefully probe the edge of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course the tools are failing. Everything on this island is falling apart right when I need it most.

🔧 Kevin18:12

Red line's moving. Two inches since this morning.

Pour a measure of isopropyl onto clean gauze, hold it ready. Watch the line on her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady-handed. Good. But the swelling's tracking upward — red line creeping past the anklebone. That's not debris anymore.
