The Storm Surges

The wind howls through the radio mast, and the shutters rattle in their fixings. The tide has reached the dock, and the water is now lapping at the lower planks.

The clouds thicken as the air pressure continues to drop, signaling an approaching front. Kevin inspects the dock structural integrity at high tide while Jenny manages the mold-prone seed tins in the cottage.

Kevin, the tide's really coming in fast—check if those south planks are taking water.

Walk to the dock to inspect the south piling while the rain drums on the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still dropping, and that ankle's burning again with the humidity. I need to check if the dock's holding despite the rising tide and whether I can still salvage anything from that seed tin before the mold spreads further.

On it.

Pull on oilskin and boots, grab the crowbar and torch, head out the porch door and down the slippery path to the dock to inspect the south piling and planks at waterline.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still dropping. South piling's the weak point — if the mortise gives way now with this swell, the whole finger goes. Need to see it myself before the next wave set hits.

Watch the gap, Kevin! If it starts pulling, use the crowbar to way it!

Sit at the kitchen table, debride the ankle withization and tweezers while watching the dock through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is already higher than an hour ago. If that shim slips, the whole thing goes with the next surge. My ankle is throbbing in sync with the pressure in the air.

Wedges are holding. Ring's fast. Planks are sound for now — but the water's licking the sister joint. Come next high tide with this swell, that's the test.

Crouch at the south piling, torch beam cutting through rain, pry gently at the lowest plank end with the crowbar to test for movement, watch the oak wedges in the mortise for any sign of working.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching from the window, not the dock. Good — keeps weight off the ankle. The gap she means is the mortise joint on the south ring. If the oak wedges start working loose under this swell, the ring pulls free and the planks follow.
