The Rising Tide

Kevin returns to the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain begin to hit the dust. The tide is now lapping at the shrine stones, and the barometer continues its slow, steady descent.

The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the lower shelves and the tide pools. The wind has shifted to the south, bringing a heavy, humid air that precedes the coming storm, despite the barometer holding steady at 998 hPa.

🔧 Kevin19:32

Weather's turning. Going to tie down the aerial and check the generator lashings.

walk to the radio mast and inspect the aerial insulator repair, then secure the generator with storm straps

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here early. Barometer dropping, tide pushing the shrine stones — this front's moving faster than the glass said. Need to get the radio aerial secured and the generator battened before the wind picks up proper.

🌿 Jenny19:33

Don't stay too long on the mast, the wind is already shifting.

Unwrap the ankle poultice to inspect the redness, then prepare a fresh sea beet and mint mash for the next application.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than he realizes; if that storm hits us, the poultice won't be enough to stop the swelling.

🔧 Kevin19:34

Won't be long. Just the tape and the guys.

climb the radio mast to inspect the self-amalgamating tape on the aerial insulator, tighten any loose guy wires, then descend and secure the generator storm lashings

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Gusts hitting the mast different now — southwest shifting west. Don't need to be up there when it squares off. Quick check on the insulator tape, then down.

🌿 Jenny19:34

Just watch the wind, it's coming from the south now.

Sit on the porch and watch the barometer, recording the drop in the journal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too concerned with the equipment when the sky is turning the color of a bruise.

🔧 Kevin19:36

South swell'll hit the north piling hard. Going to check the shim and the sister lashings after the mast.

descend the radio mast, walk to the dock, and inspect the north piling greenheart shim and the sister plank lashings at the waterline

💭 peek at the thought
South wind. That's the bad quarter — drives the swell straight into the dock face and piles water against the north piling. Barometer's already down from 998. She's logging it. Good. Means she's tracking the rate.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:36

The barometer is dropping too fast for a quick fix. Be careful with the swell.

Remove the ankle poultice to check for increased heat, then wrap it in a clean cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If that shim slips, the whole dock goes sideways, and I can't fix that in a storm alone.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:38

Aye. Back before it breaks.

walk along the dock to the north piling, crouch at the waterline to check the greenheart shim seating and the sister plank bolts and lashings, probe the oak mortise for movement with the crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
Dropping fast. She feels it too. Swell's already licking the dock planks — each wave thunders under the piling. Shim's greenheart, tough, but the oak mortise around it's the weak link. Sister lashings held last blow, but the tide's higher now. More leverage.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:38

The barometer is at 988 and falling. Don't stay out there if the tide turns.

Sit on the porch and watch the clouds, recording the pressure in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is getting too high. If that shim gives, the whole way ring is lost to the surge.
